I believe that one of the most fundamental tenets of education is the ability to recognise the different support systems and forms of motivation students require to excel both academically and holistically and thus catering lessons to best suit those needs. Additionally, creating an environment in which students can express their concerns and…

I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, but should guide the student to reaching that solution and ensure that they are able to understand the necessary steps. They should also be able to change the way they teach according to the needs of their students, as not everyone learns the same way. A tutor should be…

Personally, the best thing a tutor can do for a student is change their perspective regarding their weak subjects, Mathematics in particular has always been a favorite of mine yet I have had students who used to start sweating whenever we pulled out the textbook. However, once they realized that Mathematics can actually be quite fun, their…

The most important I as a tutor can do is to accept that each student has a different way of learning and I should adapt and blend their teaching methods according to the student, there's no one size fits all method for everyone. The most important thing a tutor can do is being able to explain a concept in a manner which a student can understand. Along with this, I think it is important for a tutor to empower their students, give them confidence, help them reach their goals and improve. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to tailor their teaching approach to meet the individual needs of each student. For example, I work with a student who has mild ADHD and struggled with maintaining focus. To address this, I incorporated short physical activities, such as star jumps, into our sessions every 15…

No matter which subject the student is learning, s/he needs to know why s/he needs to learn it. Recently, Diane Tavenner, the innovator of American education encourages students to learn whatever they want by asking them to solve problem by themselves. In the field of applied linguistics, we call it 'boost input by producing output'. I believe…

To me, a tutor is someone that can not only prepare a student in the classroom but to prepare them for life. Inside RockdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sasha worked through measurement questions from her textbook, focusing on calculating area and converting between units; she also completed a worksheet for homework support.

For Year 11, Jay tackled practice quiz problems on networks, rates, and ratios directly aligned with the standard mathematics syllabus.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Ava practiced reading aloud and writing in English before moving on to adding and subtracting fractions as well as being introduced to Roman numerals.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in Mathematics struggled to retain and apply network theory definitions, as noted: "it was just something that needed drilling—he didn't fully grasp the need for repetition." This led to difficulties when tackling unfamiliar problems, with reliance on prompts rather than independent recall.

In Year 9, one student avoided writing down working in area and perimeter tasks, sometimes erasing attempts instead of leaving a visible trail—making it harder to trace logic or learn from mistakes.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student tended to hyper-focus on irrelevant details during challenging surface area questions, sidestepping the main task and losing confidence mid-way.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Rockdale noticed a high school student who used to quietly follow instructions now catching calculation errors on his own and even pointing them out before the tutor, showing real engagement during rates and ratios work.

Another high schooler, after previously skipping written steps in maths, has begun writing down her working without reminders and even talks through her process out loud—especially useful when tackling algebraic questions she once found tricky.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who struggled with mixed numerals picked up the concept quickly this week and chose to attempt extra practice questions independently before asking for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bayside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary and St Mina's Coptic Orthodox College, Rockdale campus.
