Being a role model and mentor to the student, both academically and in life. By helping them develop their skills in the subject area, a tutor models approaches to thinking, problem solving and one's attitude towards learning. I think effective tutors support students all students to achieve their best and develop their mindset and work ethic so…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a comfortable and supportive environment where the student feels confident to ask questions and make mistakes. Learning really happens when students feel safe to try, even if they don’t get it right the first time. A tutor should also explain things in a way that makes sense to…

A tutor has the opportunity to shape a students' mind, in more ways than one. Therefore, the most important thing a tutor can do is to make the best use of this opportunity and let the student discover the best version of themselves. I believe I am very patient, which is an important quality for any tutor. I do not mind even if I have to explain…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. I suspect that this may be hard for some students at first but I am confident that they will be able to get the most out of mathematics and other…

First and foremost, helping them score well for the examinations they are going to sit for. However, along the way there, I think it's important for a tutor to help them find their own reason on why they want to do well, their own unique strengths and learning styles, guide them on how to access credible resources help them develop their own voice…

Imparting information is an important part of being a tutor, but modelling curiosity, a genuine love of learning and knowledgem and above all showing others what it looks like to be passionate about the at or discipline is as important. A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This is very important as it gives a clear direction to the students. This can also help them realise what career path would be good for them. A tutor should also be able to help students…

What do you consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student? Making sure that all of my student's questions are answered before the end of the lesson is one of the most important things in tutoring in my opinion. Asking question is the best way of learning and therefore answering question is the best way of teaching.…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to lay a right foundation for the student to learn. They must be able to relate to the student's situation and current understanding of topics/content. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence and make learning feel approachable. When students feel supported and understood, they're far more likely to engage, ask questions, and take risks, which is where real growth happens! Having empathy, because not all content comes too easy for students as it does for us, obviously. Having patience, because it can be frustrating if a tutor just expects a student to "get it" immediately. Being kind. George, Rockdale

Inside RockdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sasha worked through measurement questions from her textbook, focusing on calculating area and converting between units; she also completed a worksheet for homework support.

For Year 11, Jay tackled practice quiz problems on networks, rates, and ratios directly aligned with the standard mathematics syllabus.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Ava practiced reading aloud and writing in English before moving on to adding and subtracting fractions as well as being introduced to Roman numerals.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in Mathematics struggled to retain and apply network theory definitions, as noted: "it was just something that needed drilling—he didn't fully grasp the need for repetition." This led to difficulties when tackling unfamiliar problems, with reliance on prompts rather than independent recall.

In Year 9, one student avoided writing down working in area and perimeter tasks, sometimes erasing attempts instead of leaving a visible trail—making it harder to trace logic or learn from mistakes.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student tended to hyper-focus on irrelevant details during challenging surface area questions, sidestepping the main task and losing confidence mid-way.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Rockdale noticed a high school student who used to quietly follow instructions now catching calculation errors on his own and even pointing them out before the tutor, showing real engagement during rates and ratios work.

Another high schooler, after previously skipping written steps in maths, has begun writing down her working without reminders and even talks through her process out loud—especially useful when tackling algebraic questions she once found tricky.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who struggled with mixed numerals picked up the concept quickly this week and chose to attempt extra practice questions independently before asking for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bayside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary and St Mina's Coptic Orthodox College, Rockdale campus.
