I think understanding that every kid is different and special in their own way, and they have their own needs and methods of approaching problems is very important. Every tutor should try to personalise the tutor session based on the needs, learning pattern and pace, interests and goals of the children so that they can make the most out of it. I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them the mindset required to set them up for success. This includes teaching them the skills and the knowledge to learn content and to solve problems, especially independently. This also includes motivating them and giving them a growth related mindset. Encourage them to pursue their dreams. Teach them to be lifelong learners. I believe you have completely understood the concept when you can simplify it entirely. So, the student should totally grasp the concepts at hand. A tutor can help the student realize their passions, and help them achieve it. Making the students interested in the subject by…

I believe the two most important things a tutor can do for a student are to make sure they feel comfortable enough to open up about their difficulties and tailor the lessons to their needs in a way traditional school classes can't. As any tutor should, I try to make my lessons as informative and engaging as possible. However, I believe my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students, is to be their friends. It helps providing the students an environment where they can enjoy what they are studying. A tutor should focus on building both understanding and confidence. That includes breaking down difficult concepts, being patient, and adapting to the student’s learning style. I also think it’s important to encourage problem-solving skills so the student becomes more independent over time, rather than relying on the tutor. I think one of my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to become an understanding tutor. There is no point of forcing a student to learn something that they have no interest at. Inside Rose BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Lukas focused on finding the equation of a line, including determining gradients and y-intercepts, and practiced sketching parabolas by identifying turning points and intercepts.

Year 10 student tackled simultaneous equations as well as factorising quadratics using grouping and difference of squares strategies, working through targeted textbook problems.

For a primary school student in Year 4, recent sessions concentrated on fractions—covering addition, subtraction, multiplication and division—and converting between decimals and fractions with practical examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, a student arrived unprepared for lessons and often forgot required materials, leading to missed opportunities for feedback on financial math practice. As one tutor observed, "he did not bring the past papers that I had previously given him."

Another Year 10 student showed signs of frustration when unsure how to approach multi-step worded problems—this led to avoidance of more challenging revision tasks and repeated confusion over which methods to use.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner's tendency to count out times tables instead of recalling them from memory slowed progress in fraction conversions, especially during timed activities.

Recent Achievements

One Rose Bay tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with trig problems now confidently writes out all his working for each question, even tackling non-right angled triangles on his own.

Another high schooler made a clear shift by arriving with all homework finished and identifying where he needed extra help, leading him to solve simultaneous equations independently after some guided practice.

In Year 5, a student who previously mixed up the order of months can now recite them without hesitation and completed multi-digit subtraction questions accurately in one sitting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like McAuley Catholic Primary School.
