The most important thing to be done, rather than jumping directly into the syllabus, is to listen to the students express their strengths and weaknesses in the subject. This is to be aware of where to allocate time with the student so we address what is most important and challenging to them. As a tutor, I maintain a flexible environment, trying…

I think some of the most important things that a chemistry tutor can do for a student is obviously, being able to lift their grades as well as instilling more self-confidence in them when tackling harder questions. Another more important thing is being able to act as a mentor to the student, and relay any important information that would be…

The most important changes a chemistry tutor can cause involve improving the confidence of students and aiding a student's understanding of concepts. By increasing a student's confidence in a subject, a tutor effectively improves students' performance not just in exams but also in the classroom. Additionally, gradual changes in understanding of…

The most important role of a chemistry tutor is to be a reliable pillar of support and a trusted source of strength and knowledge. The most important thing by far is engagement. Tutoring is good, although it can only do so much if the students interest is elsewhere. The best thing a chemistry tutor can do is help the student engage more in school as the student will spend 80% of their time in the classroom and 20% with a tutor so using that 80% to your advantage is the most…

I have rarely ever used the same method of explaining a concept/theory on multiple students. It is also crucial for tutors to have time-management and resourceful qualities in order to ensure academic development in students.…

Inside Rouse HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Daniel worked on **trigonometry concepts including SOHCAHTOA and special angles**, as well as revising the ASTC quadrants and practicing quadratic equations through factorisation and the quadratic formula.

In Year 11, Sarah focused on **binomial expansions using Pascal's triangle patterns and factorials**, reviewed solving simultaneous equations by substitution and elimination, and briefly explored imaginary numbers to clarify square roots of negatives.

Year 12 student Jessica tackled **differentiation rules such as chain rule versus product rule**, with in-depth practice identifying when to use each method, and also applied trigonometric identities to solve proof questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student's tendency to skip writing steps in trigonometric proofs led her to lose track of signs and ASTC quadrant rules, which meant she sometimes wrote "None" for questions requiring detailed justification.

In Year 8 algebra, another student was seen blurting out answers without using pen and paper, resulting in confusion about how she arrived at solutions—especially with like terms and fractions.

A Year 5 student repeatedly left homework incomplete; checking her notebook revealed missed algebraic practice, causing further gaps in understanding BIDMAS and ratios.

Negative self-talk ("I'm stupid") frequently followed mistakes across all levels, undermining confidence during quizzes.

Recent Achievements

One Rouse Hill tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to avoid double-checking her work now regularly backchecks her solutions, catching small errors herself during quizzes.

Another high schooler, after struggling with trigonometric proofs and often waiting for hints, has begun tackling these questions independently and will now attempt each step before asking for help.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously panicked at long multiplication is starting to verbalise her thinking process and willingly attempts answers aloud, even when unsure. In one session, she completed every multiplication problem using the written method without needing reassurance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Vinegar Hill Memorial Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rouse Hill Public School.
