I think the most important thing a tutor can do is not pressure students and understand that everyone learns differently. Not all students will get something right away, and what matters is being patient and staying with them through the process until they understand. I believe it is about making them feel supported instead of rushed, so they can…

It is most important that a tutor doesn't give up on their students. This means not only continuing teaching the student but also means that the tutor should always believe a student can improve with their guidance. In addition, it is essential for a tutor to be able to learn the student's strengths and weaknesses and their way of thinking, so the…

Being down to earth and always there for your students - it's really easy to lose motivation or confidence in maths, and I believe that students who KNOW they're capable are far more willing to embrace new concepts and put in effort to understanding it. Explaining new concepts and skills, as well as consistently revising those skills so it isn't…

Believing in the student is the most vital quality in the tutor-student relationship in my opinion. When there is genuine faith that the student can achieve their goal, it is within my duty as their tutor to help them reach it by doing additional research, being motivated each session, and planning and organising their materials ahead of time so…

I think the most important thing about being a tutor is meeting your students on their terms. What I mean by that is that you never make them feel stupid for not knowing, or not understanding something. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help not feel embarrassed by the gaps in their knowledge, and work with them…

A tutor can explain the practical applications of the subject he or she teaches in real life. As a tutor I can make my students visualise the concepts which cannot be grasped instantly. I think that a very important aspect of tutoring is the individual attention that it provides the student with, which would not always be possible in a school setting. As tutors work closely with the student, they are also aware of the student's thinking style and capacities, and can therefore tailor their own teaching style. Furthermore, most…

Teaching the content required within a particular subject is only the start of what a tutor can do for their student, but teaching them how to apply everything they have learned to not only the subject at hand but how they are tested within that subject. Inside Rouse HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Daniel worked on **trigonometry concepts including SOHCAHTOA and special angles**, as well as revising the ASTC quadrants and practicing quadratic equations through factorisation and the quadratic formula.

In Year 11, Sarah focused on **binomial expansions using Pascal's triangle patterns and factorials**, reviewed solving simultaneous equations by substitution and elimination, and briefly explored imaginary numbers to clarify square roots of negatives.

Year 12 student Jessica tackled **differentiation rules such as chain rule versus product rule**, with in-depth practice identifying when to use each method, and also applied trigonometric identities to solve proof questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student's tendency to skip writing steps in trigonometric proofs led her to lose track of signs and ASTC quadrant rules, which meant she sometimes wrote "None" for questions requiring detailed justification.

In Year 8 algebra, another student was seen blurting out answers without using pen and paper, resulting in confusion about how she arrived at solutions—especially with like terms and fractions.

A Year 5 student repeatedly left homework incomplete; checking her notebook revealed missed algebraic practice, causing further gaps in understanding BIDMAS and ratios.

Negative self-talk ("I'm stupid") frequently followed mistakes across all levels, undermining confidence during quizzes.

Recent Achievements

One Rouse Hill tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to avoid double-checking her work now regularly backchecks her solutions, catching small errors herself during quizzes.

Another high schooler, after struggling with trigonometric proofs and often waiting for hints, has begun tackling these questions independently and will now attempt each step before asking for help.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously panicked at long multiplication is starting to verbalise her thinking process and willingly attempts answers aloud, even when unsure. In one session, she completed every multiplication problem using the written method without needing reassurance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Vinegar Hill Memorial Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rouse Hill Public School.
