A tutor and a teacher have similar duties, in that they both teach their students. However, the main difference between a tutor and a teacher is that a tutor is also a mentor. They not only teach their students, but they act as a guide and support system, helping students with their experiences to gain the most out of their academic careers as…

A tutor should foster a supportive learning environment, tailor explanations to the student’s needs, and build their confidence. Encouraging critical thinking, providing clear feedback, and adapting to different learning styles are key. Most importantly, a tutor should empower students to become independent learners, helping them develop…

I believe it's important for tutors to create a positive mindset around learning. I as a tutor would ensure my learning space is one where students can gain confidence and master skills without fear of making mistakes. This creates adventurous learners, who I can assist in exploring and forming their own connections in their learning. Another…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, personalise their learning experience, and inspire a love for learning. Confidence is foundational- when a student believes in their abilities, they are more willing to tackle challenges and push their limits. A tutor can foster this by celebrating…

The most important thing is to create a comfortable environment to allow them to feel confident in asking questions and engaging in the content. I also believe goal setting is important for each student, that way it helps them achieve and be motivated to strive for more. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is aid them in learning in a way that is suitable for them; not all students learn the same and hence can not be taught in the same way. Alongside that, outlining and fixing common and repeated mistakes are the key to growth, and a key thing a tutor can do for a student. - simplifying concepts…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to help students see the beauty in learning. This is achieved by a point I've made previously: creating a supportive, safe environment where a student can ask questions without shame. By doing so, the students willingly seek knowledge and see their mistakes as room for improvement as opposed to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to try their very best in every aspect for their student. For example, if a student is struggling, they can change up parts of the lesson to teach them in a way the students find easier to understand. I believe when the tutor is trying their best, the energy is reciprocated by the student as they…

The most important thing a tutor can do is put in 100 percent of their effort to not only teach but make sure their students understand what you teach. Beyond just teaching a student maths or English, I think a tutor can instill a sense of self-belief and confidence in their student. I believe that a tutor should always be patience and open minded as this will allow the kids to not stress while asking for assistance. Another thing is being able break down content as some content might be easier grasp with baby steps. Also being able to teach with different technique as not all individuals are the same, they have individual…

Inside Roxburgh ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Caleb worked on calculating the circumference of circles, solving perimeter problems for complex shapes, and reviewed manual methods for decimal multiplication and division.

Another Year 9 session focused on finding areas of kites and trapeziums, using linear equations to determine unknown lengths, and practicing correct answer presentation.

In a further lesson, Caleb tackled surface area questions involving cylinders—including nets and curved surfaces—using his school textbook in preparation for an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student faced time management issues during problem-solving in Physics, often spending too long on one part and not leaving enough for the rest—"he lost marks when he didn't check his working on graph questions."

In Year 11 Maths Methods, there was an over-reliance on notes and calculators; when formulas weren't instantly available, progress stalled.

For a Year 8 English essay, feedback suggested that "more depth connecting themes to the story" was needed, but the student didn't take up suggestions from previous drafts.

In Year 4 Maths, incomplete homework on times tables slowed mastery of multiplication facts.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Roxburgh Park noticed a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to ask questions now independently pinpoints her weak spots during sessions and requests targeted feedback, showing new initiative.

In VCE Physics, another student—who once relied on formula sheets for every problem—recently solved momentum and energy questions from memory and articulated his reasoning step by step without prompts.

Meanwhile, a primary student who struggled with the split strategy for multiplication has started tackling two-digit problems unassisted, even finishing her homework's first section with only minor corrections needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Craigieburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Roxburgh Park Primary School.
