A tutor can be the confidence of the subject for a student. The attitude of the tutor reflects the interest of the students to focus on their lessons. A tutor must provide a friendly environment to students so that they are calm and composed while doing their lessons I am very patient and can explain the same things on a repetitive basis. Very…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for their student, is tailor their teaching application to the student's needs and personality. Each individual is different, and there is no single one way of teaching. I believe students incredibly appreciate a teacher or tutor that will listen to their needs, and to see where their main focal…

To make a student understand things in an easy way. And be there for the students. I can find one students area of interest and as well as weakness and can concentrate on it. Also a tutor should have patience as one might have to explain something repeatedly. when we share knowledge it doesn't decrease instead it increases. That mentality is the…

I consider making the tutoring session a relaxed, relatively casual setting as one of the most important things a tutor can do. This way the student can focus solely on doing maths rather than being nervous about their surroundings. I also think it is extremely important that a tutor quickly understands how the student best learns and adapts their…

Inspire. Children are an inspiration to their teachers. As mentioned before, children are an inspiration to me since I get to learn from them as much as they get tutored from me. Understanding and patient. A lot of parents and teachers lose their patience and become unempathetic while teaching little children, however they're still learning and…

A competent tutor should understand their student's needs, provide individualized attention, encourage and motivate, properly explain difficult ideas, and assess progress in order to change their teaching style as needed. The biggest strength of me as a tutor is that I am very patient. I keep trying until the student learn the particular topic…

A few things are, 1. Make the session more productive and interactive. 2. When teaching something we should not try to make them memorize it, but we should make them understand it. 3. Prior to the session we should have a word with students and identify his/her knowledge level. I can quickly understand the level of students and adjust the…

I believe that tutoring is more than just helping the students improve at a subject, but also to help boost their own confidence in any specific area. A tutor can act as a strong support system allowing for growth and improvement of the students in all aspects of their education. I’m very patient which has helped me in the past when working…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make themselves welcoming. A good and effective tutor is open to all ideas and willing to completely work with the student. The most effective tutors will offer a variety of perspectives and welcome all criticism and differing opinions. During school, I struggled with breaking down tasks,…

I believe that building trust and a strong line of communication between a student and their tutor is important. Tutors should strive to encourage, motivate, and support their students. The most important thing is being able to breakdown the small aspects in what they are lacking. For instance, if the student does not comprehend a certain topic, the tutor should be able to go back to the root of their problem, solving that root problem often leads to results in the main issue. As a former International Baccalaureate High School…

Even though it sounds basic, I truly think that patience is the key. When you are respectful of the differences in how people learn it can allow the student to feel more comfortable and willing to engage. Taking time to work through things and giving positive and constructive feedback is crucial. I believe that I am able to find other methods and…

A tutor can give an insight to the students not only in academic perspective but also in general life as most of the time students spend at college or school after their home during their growing up phase Teaching requires patience, persistence and passion. Inside Russell ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Remi worked through homework covering multiplication and division, plus rapid-fire practice on fractions and time/calendar questions.

For Year 6, Ava tackled perimeter and area problems alongside exercises in fractions and percentages to build confidence with multi-step maths.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Max focused on understanding angles and measurement, using diagrams to visualise different types of angles and how they're calculated.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student recently dodged homework questions and showed reluctance to read set texts outside his preferred genres.

In maths, he often avoided showing working for problems, with one lesson noting, "he believed the answer to be enough by itself." This habit became a barrier in both fractions and algebra revision.

Another high school session saw him rely on spellcheck rather than attempting spelling tasks independently, leading to limited retention.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student struggled to recall times tables out of order and hesitated with mental calculations—sometimes skipping numbers or forgetting subtraction strategies—causing visible frustration during multi-digit problems.

Recent Achievements

One Russell Vale tutoring session saw a Year 9 student, Max, approach his PDHPE test revision with much more initiative—he asked specific questions when unsure, instead of quietly guessing as he would have in earlier lessons.

In Year 7 maths, Arvon became noticeably more vocal about what he wanted to learn and managed to complete all ten numeral value questions correctly when dictated aloud—a big step up from his usual hesitation with mental recall.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who initially struggled to add small numbers now uses finger counting independently and worked through large addition sums without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corrimal District Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Russell Vale Public School.
