To grant a student the ability to pursue their dreams of getting entrance to a prestigious university course, or to simply allow them to maximally blossom their high school results to be presentable to a future employer. Perhaps sparking an interest in something that one would never have even considered a prospect, or bestow them wisdom from my…

I'm convinced learning is an ongoing process and as a biology tutor, I hope to contribute the community by making a difference in the lives of young people. For me, this involves encouraging others to learn as a passion rather than an obligation, so that others can also love learning as I do. I also realise that while I enjoy learning and find it…

If you are a biology tutor, your job is to empower other people. Even if you are picking up blind spots, asking a student to paraphrase something, or advising more research in a particular area, there are ways to convey this information that are encouraging and helpful, (rather than condescending). We all have blind spots, too. I have found…

The most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is to make sure a student can fully understand topics that have previously been difficult. I do not think it is not enough for a tutor to simply talk through the topic with the student and expect them to understand it. A tutor should explain the topic to the student and then, after more…

The most important that a biology tutor can do for a student is to be the best friend of that student. It is crucial to remember that there are many other aspects to that student than just academic. If you know the student well enough, that student will begin to enjoy studying and being able to perform great academically. I believe that is the…

Inside Seventeen Mile RocksTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Priya focused on factorising polynomials and applying the remainder theorem, as well as interpreting and sketching piecewise functions.

In Year 9, Liam practised solving linear equations and worked with decimal operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to strengthen his number skills.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Zoe consolidated her understanding of ratios between numbers and practised dividing by 10, 100, and 1000 with results calculated to two decimal places.

Recent Challenges

Homework was not completed for a Year 11 Chemistry session, limiting progress on consolidating acid/base concepts.

In Year 12 Maths Methods, the notes highlighted "she tries to draw the graph in her head instead of working it out," which led to confusion with piecewise and polynomial graphs—important steps were skipped on paper.

A Year 9 student repeatedly forgot formulas during algebra and area questions, partly from only revising recent content instead of older material.

One Year 4 learner didn't remember to add carried numbers in multi-digit addition, causing calculation slip-ups that went unchecked.

Recent Achievements

One Seventeen Mile Rocks tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to get stuck rearranging formulas now quickly solves for unknowns and graphs linear equations with only a nudge.

In chemistry, a senior high school student who previously mixed up different acid types is now confidently explaining the steps for polyprotic acids and balancing tricky equations independently.

Meanwhile, in primary maths, Tahlia, who struggled to remember her 9x tables, now uses clever tricks she's learned to break them down herself and recently worked through big number multiplication problems like 147 x 48 without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Ommaney Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.
