Tutors have two roles, One is to actively support the student who might be struggling to cope up with their peers and/or looking to improve their performance. The second is to make the student learn in a different environment from their school. Schools have multiple children and every child has some issue they are facing. As a tutor sitting 1-1…

A tutor must listen to their students and understand that each child is unique and has different learning rates. The tutor must be patient with the child and create strategies for efficient learning. I think tutor should do everything for his or her students because after the parents only teacher is one person who can very closed for the student. Tutor should look after their students and if they have any bad habit then it's tutor responsibility to guide them in right direction and also inform their parents. Tutor can make hard subject into…

A tutor can guide and help the student in the teaching-learning process. First, the tutor should find innovative ways of teaching learning and different methodologies and engage them so that their learning happens in the best way possible. A tutor should focus on practice and assessments. He/she can share the tips and techniques on how to study…

In my humble opinion, I believe that ACTIVE LISTENING is the most important quality that good tutors must possess. - Good tutors must recognise that students generally have an idea of the topic at hand. Instead of simply continuing to "teach" it is vital that tutors ask students of their understanding of the topic so that gaps in knowledge can…

The most import things that a tutor can do for a student are : # I can be a good listener , as sometimes its hard to explain again and again. # A tutor should make a good bond with the student so he can ask any doubt. # Instead looking at the strengths of a student , tutor should look for the weaknesses and should start preparing the student…

Tutors need to be patient, not every student is equally as smart, or equally as attentive. You have to find a balance. A great example I think would be is planting a seed. After you put the seed in the ground, you can put all the water in the world, but it's not gonna grow into a tree in just one day, just like a student, you will break the…

If your student is not in their comfort zone while they are learning no matter how good your grades are a student you can't be a good teacher.i always put myself in the student's place first and then I act like the teacher. Because only then i can understand how shall my approach be.…

I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I believe the most important role of a tutor is to help students build genuine understanding rather than just memorising methods, so they can apply concepts independently. It’s also important to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment that builds confidence and encourages questions. Over time, a tutor should foster independence while…

During the first phone call, I felt the staff member was quite rushed. I had a lot to explain and felt I didn't get to finish. His final decision was no, the company probably couldn't help me but I persisted. Then it worked out in the end and I got a tutor. The tutor has attended once and I'm happy with him.

Inside ShelleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Aryan practised dividing fractions and calculating percentages, focusing on applying these skills to piecewise defined relationships.

In Year 10, Ethan worked through factoring and expanding quadratic expressions as well as a brief introduction to compound interest using step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Grace revised matrix multiplication and explored the normal distribution in statistics, also touching on key finance topics relevant to her coursework.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student struggled with factorising quadratics in a test and, as noted, "ran out of time"—test anxiety led to second-guessing answers and slow progress.

In Year 10 maths, skipping clear layout on simultaneous equations meant errors weren't spotted until feedback was given; the tutor wrote, "laying out answers properly and clearly" was still an issue.

In primary maths, one child hesitated to ask for help when stuck multiplying large numbers—missing chances to clarify confusion early.

For a senior student using the CAS Classpad, over-reliance on calculator steps made it harder to remember key finance formulas without prompts during practice.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Shelley noticed one Year 10 student, who previously hesitated to check her own work, now confidently uses the "talking aloud" technique and backchecks her answers on quadratic expansions—meaning she trusts her instincts but also double-checks without wasting time.

Another high schooler has shifted from struggling with linear equations to independently substituting values and successfully graphing lines, even explaining how slope direction changes with gradient sign.

In a younger session, a primary student who rarely participated began asking more questions when uncertain and started showing all working steps for each maths problem before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Riverton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Shelley Primary School.
