I think being able to answer all their inquires and helping them grow in the subject is a very important part of being a tutor. I also think being patient is an essential trait to have as at times you may need to think of different ways to explain concepts for students to be able to grasp it I think I’m very good at explaining things to students…

A tutor should not only be able to teach an individual facts, knowledge, the "right" information to check a box in a test, set, and forget. A tutor should be able to teach the individual why something is so, and allow them to logically and conceptually acknowledge information from an intuitive standpoint, not requiring them to rote remember the…

“I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make learning clear and enjoyable, and help them develop independent learning skills. A good tutor doesn’t just teach content — they help the student believe in their ability to succeed.†“My strengths as a tutor are patience, clear…

Patience is needed to be a successful tutor. Also, passion should be there. A tutor can always go for application based approach and giving examples of where the teaching syllabus can be applied to in real world. I can tutor in easy way and make student visualize in a way to solve the questions adeptly. I can repeat the ways until it is…

Very important to show you believe in their ability but letting them also know that sometimes perserverance is required. As a tutor, you are part of their team to help them succeed. Everyone is able to learn and it is important to ensure the tutor is teaching at a level appropriate to the student's level of understanding. Patience and being able…

Just be student focussed. Make them think for themselves. It took me a long time in my personal education journey to learn this, but once I learnt it, I make sure my students don't make the mistake of learning passively. They need to get involved, think for themselves, and this way they'll not only retain what they learn, but grow more broadly…

As a tutor, I think the most important thing he can do is listen. Listening closely to the student will help him assess the student's level and understanding, and he can prepare his teaching material accordingly. A tutor should also provide feedback to the student's performance and set targets for him to achieve. Another key skill a tutor should…

The primary thing a tutor can/ must do for a student is to understand them. Give them the freedom to express their doubts and curiosity, so that they can develop more. Also never compare them with others, always try to make them their better version. Secondly, being a friend to your student can make a huge difference in the way of learning. It…

As a tutor I believe the key actions we can do are supporting the child, giving encouragement, and ensuring the child's safety. Sometimes children need the reassurance that it's ok to fail and with hard work and practice we can help them improve with any subject. Children can get easily frustrated or upset with challenging academic material but if…

The most important thing a tutor can do is give students the skills to work through problems on their own. Mathematics is all about problem solving which many students struggle to do because they don't have the foundation of skills to know what solutions to reach for. A good tutor starts at the base of the students skills and gives them a strong…

I believe is the ability of self thinking. As a tutor, our job is to lead to students to the correct way of thinking and figuring out the questions. We can provide them the relevant sources to help them think. I believe it is the patience that make me a good tutor. Inside Somerton ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student James worked through NAPLAN Numeracy practice questions, focusing on relationships between fractions, decimals, and percentages, and understanding key terminology and equivalence.

Year 10 student Finn tackled probability concepts such as events and outcomes before moving on to rates, ratios, and proportions for an upcoming assignment.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex studied the production and transmission of electromagnetic waves in Physics and practiced numerical problem-solving alongside revision of integration techniques in Mathematics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student in Physics mixed up formulas for derivatives and antiderivatives, leading to confusion during problem-solving—"he sometimes mixes up the stuff," noted a tutor.

In Year 11 Maths, forgetting key constants slowed down progress with numericals, while another senior struggled to recall standard deviation and variance formulas in Statistics.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student had trouble correctly labelling headings on the place value board, which made it harder to organise answers.

During reading tasks in Year 3, reluctance to participate meant missed opportunities for practice; one session required repeated prompting just to get started.

Recent Achievements

One Somerton Park tutor noticed James is now solving most maths problems in class after previously needing extra support and even started asking for more challenging questions.

Chloe, also in high school, has moved from hesitating on worded problems to working through them independently during sessions—she recently tackled several ratio questions by herself without prompting.

Meanwhile, in Year 3, Jye used to be quiet and reserved but has begun involving himself fully in lessons and now brings home books to share his spelling lists and writing pieces with real pride.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenelg Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart College - Marcellin Campus.
