I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is ensure that the information and skills being taught are useful to the student. To be able to identify the areas of which a student is having a hard time and adapt their way of teaching. Understanding that the students learning is the number one priority when teaching and that…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be able to listen and support the student. Learning is easy when the environment is positive and calm. I have really good communication skills and I am patient. I have younger siblings so I completely understand what it is like being in a tense study situation while trying to help…

The most important thing a tutor should do for a student is make them feel good about themselves. If the student develops a mentality where they feel as if they will never be able to learn something, they wont. It will be my job as a tutor to encourage them to believe in their own capabilities and further expand on this with different teaching…

Be empathetic... Often students are going through a lot more than just school and/or sport, and sometimes tutors do not realise this when they're loading them with a lot of information. By being empathetic and patient that tutor is able to consider that needs of the student and alter sessions accordingly to ensure the greatest bang for the buck. I…

Amongst other things, being a figure of support for students is very important as a tutor. Instead of solely fulfilling one's role in an academic tutor aspect, instilling values within students with regards to work quality, and being someone for them to talk to is a significant aspect of this position I believe my ability to relate to students,…

Therefore, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure that they reach their full potential. I think…

I consider confidence to be the most important thing I can give to a student as I believe every student has the capability of doing well in any subject, but belief in themselves is needed. The role of a tutor in a student's academic journey is vital, and several key aspects define their importance. Firstly, a tutor should provide personalized guidance and support, tailoring their teaching style to the student's needs and learning pace. This individualized attention helps students grasp challenging concepts and build confidence.…

Most importantly a tutor should understand the goals and needs of each student individually - what they find difficult and why they struggle with certain concepts. Subsequently, tutors should teach students the concepts and ensure they understand how to solve problems, this provides lifelong problem solving skills rather than memorised methods to…

Kids' attention span are short and I think the most important thing a tutor can do for the tutees/students is to be compassionate. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them feel capable. Beyond explaining content, a tutor should create a space where students feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and think out loud without fear of judgment. A good tutor doesn’t just give answers, but teaches students how to approach problems,…

Inside South PenrithTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Katie worked on applying the Pythagoras theorem to complex word problems and practised interpreting probability scenarios involving cards and dice.

For Year 10, Isabella received support with her maths assignment, focusing particularly on vector proofs and resolving issues in understanding key concepts.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Olivia prepared for an upcoming exam by revising trigonometric graphs and log laws, tackling targeted practice questions for consolidation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student hesitated to show full working in indices and trigonometry, with comments such as "she was trying to memorise the answer rather than how to work out the questions." This avoidance led to confusion when facing new question formats.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's written solutions on Pythagoras and fractions lacked clarity—errors in squaring numbers or missing steps slowed progress during review.

In primary, one child struggled to add beyond five without finger-counting, which made basic calculations laborious and eroded confidence when circling multiple-choice answers.

Unclear written processes often left gaps that became stumbling blocks during revision or tests.

Recent Achievements

One South Penrith tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who'd struggled with log laws and trigonometric graphs finally start using log rules confidently and finish graphing tasks without second-guessing every step.

In a Year 8 session, a student who was hesitant to ask for help before now stops the lesson to clarify what she doesn't understand, instead of just guessing—she's also tackling more complex probability questions independently.

Meanwhile, one of our primary students who used to mix up repeated addition and multiplication can now explain the difference between "4x" and "x⁴," even giving her own examples during the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Penrith City Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Penrith South Public School.
