The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to cater to their needs. Not all children work at the same pace or understand concepts the same way. It is essential to understand their needs and facilitate to them; so they feel comfortable in engaging in learning which might seem challenging for them. My strengths as a tutor are…

As a tutor, I believe the best way to support my students is to build healthy relationships by staying patient, to listen carefully to their concerns, and constantly checking in on their progress. Through doing so, it will foster better communication between us resulting in the student feeling more comfortable asking more questions and getting…

A tutor should provide a student with a platform to achieve the results they desire. This may involve providing students with the knowledge they need to understand topics, challenging their abilities or providing motivation for the student to work and be productive. It is also necessary to help the student understand the effort they put into their…

The most important thing, is for the tutor to inspire the student to learn. There is nothing greater than education and as Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can use to change the world" I'd inspire my students to be successful and to create a love for learning, so they will always keep on learning…

Make them independent problem solvers and this can be done by first bringing some motivation and then confidence in the student that they can improve their study habits and learn what they may find 'challenging' at the moment. But I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build good rapport with students which is the basis for everything…

Teach them how to study. I feel that too many students think the only way to study is to read the text book or talk to the teacher. Although these are valid ways I feel that most students don't realise there are other ways to study. I personal prefer to watch videos explaining the subject, draw pictures and diagrams, and then make flash cards.…

A tutor should never let down his students but always encourage them through their journey together. Through this, the student feels more comfortable with the tutor as the tutor's encouragement motivates the student to strive for greater results. This allows them to grow in confidence hence developing an intrinsic motivation to succeed. The role…

It's important for a tutor to guide the student through some problems, not just teach the concepts. Even if you understand the concepts, it can sometimes be harder to approach the problems than the concepts themselves. I often use real-life examples to help students relate concepts to their everyday lives. I also share some small tricks to…

Being close to the student…

Inside South PenrithTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Katie worked on applying the Pythagoras theorem to complex word problems and practised interpreting probability scenarios involving cards and dice.

For Year 10, Isabella received support with her maths assignment, focusing particularly on vector proofs and resolving issues in understanding key concepts.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Olivia prepared for an upcoming exam by revising trigonometric graphs and log laws, tackling targeted practice questions for consolidation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student hesitated to show full working in indices and trigonometry, with comments such as "she was trying to memorise the answer rather than how to work out the questions." This avoidance led to confusion when facing new question formats.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's written solutions on Pythagoras and fractions lacked clarity—errors in squaring numbers or missing steps slowed progress during review.

In primary, one child struggled to add beyond five without finger-counting, which made basic calculations laborious and eroded confidence when circling multiple-choice answers.

Unclear written processes often left gaps that became stumbling blocks during revision or tests.

Recent Achievements

One South Penrith tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who'd struggled with log laws and trigonometric graphs finally start using log rules confidently and finish graphing tasks without second-guessing every step.

In a Year 8 session, a student who was hesitant to ask for help before now stops the lesson to clarify what she doesn't understand, instead of just guessing—she's also tackling more complex probability questions independently.

Meanwhile, one of our primary students who used to mix up repeated addition and multiplication can now explain the difference between "4x" and "x⁴," even giving her own examples during the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Penrith City Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Penrith South Public School.
