A tutor needs to inspire the students in such a way that they know what their efforts will make them accomplish. A very few teachers are able to provide the contextual applications of what they teach the students. I believe it is paramount that a student know about WHY he is being taught something. Sparking interest in studies is not easy at times…

A tutor should be there to support the student through all academic struggles they are facing and help the student reach all their academic goals. The tutor should be familiar with their students learning style and preferences, then adjust their tutoring to suit. A tutor should also create a safe environment where the student feels they can ask…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is foster an environment of belonging so that their curiosity and appreciation for the subject can be fostered without judgement, ultimately allowing them to better perform in exam situations. I think reiterating to students that studying is a skill and not an innate quality…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to be reliable, knowledgable and help the student reach and exceed their expectations. A tutor should inspire and motivate students to do maths and increase their interest in this subject. Also, tutor should make their students at ease so that they are more comfortable asking questions and clarifying their doubts. Also tutors should ensure that their students understand concepts fully. Although explaining concepts is definitely useful, I believe it is a tutor's responsibility to show students how to enjoy studying and do it more effectively. Helping students mentally through encouragement and giving them tips on how to thrive in any avenue of study and learning will benefit them far more than just learning a formula or…

My experience with helping my friends and classmates speaks here, that I should be patient and understanding about their situation, at the same time be scheduled and organized so the tutor and a student can be kept up to schedule with the current position of their curriculum, whist not feeling pressured to do so. Simplify concepts in an understandable personalized way for them to understand at their own rythm. A tutor can relieve the preassure of due dates or schedules from the classroom and advance along with the student. Focusing on understanding how the student learns, ask them about their interests and being able to relate the subject with something…

To actively listen and build their confidence. This is absolutely one of the most important things a tutor can do, as if the student doesn't feel heard, or is not confident (despite having the skill/talent), they will get no where, and won't perform at their best. I'd say my main strength is my patience, along side with communication and…

It is most important for a tutor to engage with the student, so that they will be more inclined to be attentive and take the lessons seriously. It is also neccesary to make the neccesary preperations required for the student, e.g background research for foreign topics/ or remodled questions, to suit the student's needs and allow for efficient…

Inside South TurramurraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Sam worked through probability, focusing on basic chance experiments and interpreting results from tables.

In Year 10, Grace practised trigonometric graph sketching and applied the binomial theorem to expansion problems using structured examples.

For Year 12, Daniel revised calculus applications such as differentiation of exponentials and tackled financial maths questions involving compound interest, reviewing past paper questions for exam preparation.

Recent Challenges

Several process habits stood out across year levels.

In Year 11 calculus, one student often left revision exercises incomplete and didn't revisit assigned practice, making it hard to retain differentiation methods—"he is also not going back and doing revision exercises that are assigned to him."

Another, working on advanced algebra in Year 10, regularly struggled to start multi-step problems without hints, which slowed progress on unfamiliar application questions.

During a Year 12 statistics lesson, skipping written steps in probability led to errors with CDF and PDF relationships; this meant extra time was spent retracing calculations instead of tackling new material.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in South Turramurra noticed that one Year 12 student, after previously hesitating to ask for clarification, now regularly speaks up when stuck on tricky calculus questions and seeks feedback to double-check his approach.

Another high schooler has shifted from needing step-by-step guidance in coordinate geometry to tackling most problems independently and even choosing harder challenge questions during lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently began outlining proofs unaided in class—something he'd struggled with just a week before—and completed the session by successfully presenting his reasoning without prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Turramurra Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Turramurra Public School.
