I firmly believe that the fundamentals are the core of good learning. A tutor should focus on the students concepts, as well as ensure that they dont have any doubts regarding the topics covered As a current student myself, I believe that i can connect with the students and form a good relationship with them, which would make the learning process…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to their problems patiently, before jumping into conclusions too quickly. Then, guide and lead them onto the right path. I am an empath person, and I often put myself in other's shoes in order to understand how they feel and think. I think that is a great quality that makes me…

The most crucial things a tutor should have are: First, the tutor's own capability to solve the questions, to organise their time and to work under pressure. Second, to become a good tutor, a person has to be able to communicate and convey their ideas fully while being able to listen and understand what is in the student's mind. Last but not…

As a tutor, I believe helping my students to understand their math material and exceling their examinations is one of the most important things. I believe good communication with the student is also important. This is to understand where their strengths and weaknesses are to allow work in those areas that require improvements. It is also important…

Instil in a student a love of learning; teach them how to learn and how to manage their own education. It is relatively easy to study enough to get good marks in an exam, but having a positive attitude and active approach towards learning leads to much better information retention and better outcomes in the future, when the student is on their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show them not the final answer to a question, but in detail the method in which that answer was obtained because ultimately in a test situation the student will have a completely new question in which they have to be confident in using their own methods and not simply memorised answers. I…

It is about enjoying the learning process. Pressure can be okay to some individual, but for most it can be pain where it can lead to failure. That, in a sense, is…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
