I believe that the most important thing which a tutor can do for a student is providing support, encouragement as well as most importantly building confidence within the subject. The importance of constructing a Childs esteem and sense of accomplishment within a subject is often disregarded however the effect of doing so is transformative within…

Probably the most important thing is making it safe to be confused out loud. A lot of students hide what they don't understand because they're embarrassed, and if a tutor doesn't create space for "I actually don't get this at all," you end up polishing gaps instead of fixing them. Beyond that, I think a good tutor builds independence rather than…

Each student has a unique way of thinking, understanding and implementing. The most important thing a tutor can do is to understand how their students minds work, adapt to their way of thinking and understanding, and conceptualize theory for beneficial implementation. I once was a student and understand the importance of understanding a subject…

A tutor shouldn't be the individual who would only be associated with studies and stuff. A tutor should be someone to whom a student can approach with any sorts of problem with the expectation that their tutor can find a solution to it. Moreover, a tutor should be a guiding light to the student. - Communication - Experience -…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen, and to be a pillar of support they can lean on not only in their academics, but also in their personal lives. High school can be a really stressful period for students, not only in the immense pressure that students are under but also with the dramatic shifts their minds…

Be a person who they can come to when they need help. Always be as clear with them as possible, and be ready for whatever questions they might have for you. Remember to always be challenging the student, but only a little bit at a time so they don't feel overwhelmed. Also important is to make sure they celebrate when they make progress so that they don't have to wait until their next test or exam…

I believe that a tutor must be flexible and patient, as all students' needs are different. They have to be persistent and encouraging, and make sure that any success is emphasised and also improved upon. The tutor should not only help the student to understand their coursework, but also help them to implement their own study plans and methods, so…

Enhance students' confidence in their academic ability and empower them to achieve their dreams. I believe this is the most important thing as eventually, a student will cease tutoring, however, if you instil in students a positive mindset towards learning and a belief in themselves, they will be able to motivate themselves to achieve their…

I think a tutor must be understanding and helpful. Finding innovative ways to teach and repeat the same concept. If the teacher teaches the student something and I as the tutor say the same thing, there is no understanding that would be gained. It is important to understand exactly what the student is not clear or sure about and clear those doubts…

Equip them with the ability to eventually solve problems independently. I believe a tutor plays a crucial role in molding a student's academic journey, aside from their time spent at school. It is imperative to build a good working relationship with the student, which will aid the student in being comfortable and clarifying all doubts. Be able to understand that not every student is the same. Everyone's unique and their learning styles are different, so approaching every student with the same method to teach is not a good idea. I believe that the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide supplemental support to the student's primary learning, especially if the teacher's style does not suit the student. This may involve offering alternative teaching styles or diving into deeper details that the teacher may not have time to cover. Ultimately, a…

Academically, I want to be able to build a student's confidence in their mastery of the subject, and familiarize the students with questions that may come up in an exam. Being willing to help, but also acknowledge the rare instances where a tutor may be unable to help to a confident level. I believe it is better to acknowledge if you do not know something rather than pretend you do and risk teaching something that is incorrect. When this problem is encountered, however, it is up to the tutor to rectify this by…

Inside SpringvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Zara worked on trigonometric ratios and similar triangles, using diagrams to solve for unknowns and apply similarity rules.

Year 10 student Jamie focused on consolidating knowledge of compound interest through textbook questions and tackled worded problems involving sales commissions and tax brackets.

For a younger learner in Year 6, Alex practised converting fractions to percentages as well as finding the percentage of a given amount within financial maths.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Chemistry, a student's lab report writing was described as "a little hard to interpret at times," with formatting making conclusions unclear. In the same subject, short-answer exam sections moved slowly and explanations lacked precision—this left less time for extended responses under test conditions.

A Year 9 Maths student repeatedly relied on a calculator for division and multiplication ("she currently solely does long division"), which slowed problem-solving and blocked quick mental checks during class quizzes.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner often forgot materials like pencils and worksheets, making it harder to participate in hands-on tasks or follow along during lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Springvale tutor noted a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on redox equations is now independently balancing full redox reactions and double-checking with oxidation numbers—something he previously found confusing.

Another high school student has shifted from silent guessing to actively talking through her approach on short-answer chemistry questions, clearly outlining her reasoning as she works.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, a student who was hesitant about adding large numbers is now confidently using his fingers to add four-digit numbers without prompting, finishing problems that would have stalled him before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dingley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Springvale Rise Primary School-Springvale Road Campus.
