Someone once told me a great teacher is not a messiah but a guide. As a tutor, I do not gift my mentees the treasure of knowledge but rather act as a guide toward achieving them. I believe the most important thing that a tutor can do for their students in the limited time that they have is to show them how to study on their own and succeed even…

A mentor or teacher can teach his/her students about reality and prepare them for various situation that they will face in future. Teacher can act as a friend, a motivator and a helping hand. The most important thing a tutor can do wouldn't be to have the answers to every question they have. It would be to teach a student properly so they understand the task properly, so that in the future, they can do it by themselves. It is important to teach students that mistakes often occur and these are crucial, as it allows us to recognise…

A tutor can encourage a student that they can do it. There is no word as no. Teacher's need to imbibe confidence in students especially those who are failing to acheive and give them a reason to do well in their studies. Teacher's need to be patient as well. These are some of my strengths: Patience Kindness Sense of…

I believe effort is the most important thing, regular check ins, solving problems for the student and being able to not only be a tutor but also a friend. Lacking effort to corny especially when I was a tutor made me feel like I wasn’t important and I wasn’t getting my moneys worth. As a tutor I believe I’m able to create a strong connection…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is ask the student what they want to get out of tutoring. Every student has different goals, and a good tutor recognises that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. By understanding those goals and regularly revisiting them, the tutor can tailor their teaching methods to suit the individual…

Inside St IvesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jasmine focused on long division through worded problems and multi-step questions.

In Year 9, Ben worked on applying trigonometric ratios (sin, cos, tan) to find unknown angles and side lengths, as well as tackling coordinate geometry challenges involving harder diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia concentrated on finding x- and y-intercepts of parabolas and determining maximum values on curves using graphing techniques.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, messy written work—particularly in function notation—made it tough to spot errors and track logic, as one tutor noted: "Setting out work neatly and clearly" was a key target.

A Year 11 student revising statistics struggled to apply feedback after calculating the median incorrectly by one position, leading to repeated mistakes with quartiles on homework.

In senior economics, over-reliance on notes during practice questions meant formulas weren't memorised; when asked about opportunity cost or the balance of payments, he needed his sheet every time. This reliance slowed recall under timed conditions.

Recent Achievements

One St Ives tutor recently saw a Year 12 student who used to mix up the different accounts in balance of payments now accurately distinguish between them and explain what causes deficits or surpluses—something he'd struggled with before.

In a Year 10 session, Jasmin, who was previously confused by box and whisker plots, can now confidently calculate quartiles and interpret what they represent in data sets.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who would rush through maths questions is now pausing to read each one carefully before answering, leading to fewer mistakes on their worksheets.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Ives Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School.
