A mentor or teacher can teach his/her students about reality and prepare them for various situation that they will face in future. Teacher can act as a friend, a motivator and a helping hand. I am Extrovert, good listener and I can work as a motivator. Working with the students comes with great responsibility. I love to take that challenge and be…

Meet them where they are, not where you expect them to be. A lot of students come in already feeling like they're bad at the subject, so the priority is rebuilding their confidence first. Getting the right answer matters, but getting the student to believe they can get the right answer matters more. My maths background gives me a strong command of…

Tutoring is a dynamic and transformative process. As a result, I always consider the most crucial responsibility of a tutor to go beyond imparting knowledge; it involves providing tailored support and fostering confidence in learning. In other words, after identifying individual learning styles and needs, tutors should provide highly personalized…

Listen to the student and do not rush them. Sometimes taking time on a simpler problem instead of skipping straight to the hard stuff is far more beneficial. I have great communication skills and feel I have a strong ability to explain complex problems in a simple and understandable…

I believe one of the things a tutor should find important is to help find coping mechanisms the students can use to ease their exam anxiety. As well as that I believe a tutor should work at the pace that best suits the student rather than the tutor. I believe that I am an outgoing, confident and kind person who can get along with all types of…

A tutor is there to help a student reach their potential, in recognising and supporting their own weaknesses and strengths. Tutors should nurture students to recognise and provide confidence. Successful tutoring is reflected with good results and personal satisfaction of watching your own student improve. I believe I have good communication…

With my personal experience and from what I have seen with friends, a tutor increasing a student's marks is only about 30% of the true benefit. What really changes, is your whole approach to learning. To be frank, I used be to near the bottom rank for math at my school, roughly 90/125. After going tutoring and experiencing success for the first…

Often in school, teachers teach a subject in only one way rather than catering for each individual in the class, which can often make students feel 'dumb' or hate the subject. I believe the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to show them the many different ways to approach the subject and help them to find a new way that…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are being an attentive and listening mentor, ready to help with any issues. I think some of my…

- being empathetic and not sympathetic. - Maths should be taught in a way that it's no longer scary, and history in a way it's not boring . - homeworks and assignments should be for improvement and not merely a task - be a friend they can confide in , there are 2 types of fuels self sustaining energy once harnessed (like uranium) and the ones…

Encouragement, and patience. Different students excel in different focus areas, and they require help in the ones they struggle in. But you also can't give them a false confidence. Make them certain in their capabilities, and their belief in themselves, and it be based on the fact they have those capabilities. Patience, and a willingness to…

Inside St IvesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jasmine focused on long division through worded problems and multi-step questions.

In Year 9, Ben worked on applying trigonometric ratios (sin, cos, tan) to find unknown angles and side lengths, as well as tackling coordinate geometry challenges involving harder diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia concentrated on finding x- and y-intercepts of parabolas and determining maximum values on curves using graphing techniques.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, messy written work—particularly in function notation—made it tough to spot errors and track logic, as one tutor noted: "Setting out work neatly and clearly" was a key target.

A Year 11 student revising statistics struggled to apply feedback after calculating the median incorrectly by one position, leading to repeated mistakes with quartiles on homework.

In senior economics, over-reliance on notes during practice questions meant formulas weren't memorised; when asked about opportunity cost or the balance of payments, he needed his sheet every time. This reliance slowed recall under timed conditions.

Recent Achievements

One St Ives tutor recently saw a Year 12 student who used to mix up the different accounts in balance of payments now accurately distinguish between them and explain what causes deficits or surpluses—something he'd struggled with before.

In a Year 10 session, Jasmin, who was previously confused by box and whisker plots, can now confidently calculate quartiles and interpret what they represent in data sets.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who would rush through maths questions is now pausing to read each one carefully before answering, leading to fewer mistakes on their worksheets.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Ives Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School.
