Make sure students acquire as much knowledge on the subject as possible so that, at the end of the day, the students are able to show what they've learned, practice what they've learned in order to succeed in tests and such. Also, I want students to be confident in themselves and their knowledge and have the determination to do their best and give…

Explaining concepts as thoroughly as possible as that's what I found to be useful for me, and trying different methods of conveying information until the student gets it. As a student I strive to understand the content provided as well beyond the scope required to fully cement concepts in my mind. I find that to have a much more pronounced impact…

The most important things a tutor can do is to make his/her students think. Not making them mugg up the whole syllabus but to understand the things and study by able to make them connect with real life examples. Make them practice the things that they have learned. Only practice can make a person perfect in anything. I am able to think the way…

The most significant thing a tutor can do is spark interest in the heart of student towards the subject. Math is a tough subject however its important to find the underlying meaning which will eventually spark the interest towards the subject. So, sparking the interest towards a subject is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. My…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can provide a student is confidence. It is paramount that a tutor encourages the student to become intrinsically motivated to study and to cultivate a love for the subject, as this will allow the student to fully achieve their potential. Ensuring that a student has confidence and self belief can be just as…

The most important thing that can be done is to give as many resources as necessary. I say this because of all the tutors I have had, the most helpful was the one that gave me access to endless resources which constantly had me practicing my content which greatly assisted me in realising my weaknesses. Another important factor would be to be as…

I think that it's really important to be a good listener so that you can use feedback from students to improve your teaching. Not everyone learns in the same way so it's really important to work with each student to find the learning tehniques that work best for them. It's also important to recognise that each student could prefer different…

To give the student confidence and show them that the subject is not beyond their understandings. Prove that It's not difficult but needs to be approached correctly. Almost all students have more than enough talent to do their study, the most import thing in tutoring is to help them to uncover that (sometimes) hidden talent. In addition to my…

Helping a student visualize the portions they learn would be the best thing a tutor can do for a student. If a student is able to visualize a portion, the student will be able to learn the concept and use it to apply in various applications. It depends a little bit on age but the older they get the more important confidence is going to be and giving the students confidence is the most important job. I believe the most important thing for a tutor to do is to keep the student engaged. Often students in tutoring are behind in work because they lose focus in a classroom or simply find it boring. Being able to hone a student's attention to the work will dramatically improve their chances of success. I can often work with different learning styles,…

Inside St JamesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Mieke worked on visualising data and interpreting graphs, then solved word problems involving graphing data.

In Year 10, Ronja focused on ionic equations and practised calculating titration quantities using stoichiometric ratios.

For Year 11, Fatima reviewed redox equations and oxidation numbers before revisiting subatomic particles and tackling linear equations relevant to chemistry calculations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Chemistry, the student still shows some minor mistakes in writing chemical formulas, especially when revising ionic and polyatomic ions—missteps that lingered after sessions unless earlier material was rechecked.

A Year 9 student did not complete assigned homework or maintain a school notebook, making it difficult to track progress in new math concepts.

For a Year 6 learner, untidy handwriting made written work hard to read, leading to confusion during revision.

In English (Year 10), one student hesitated to organize thoughts on paper, often leaving drafts unfinished; as the tutor noted, "she writes well but is often hesitant."

Recent Achievements

One St James tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously relied heavily on guidance now summarising the main steps for balancing ionic equations and explaining the stoichiometric ratio's importance in titration problems—an area that had caused confusion before.

In another session, a high schooler began independently solving questions after gaps in balancing half-equations were addressed; she tackled most homework with minimal help, marking a real shift from earlier sessions.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to rush through English assignments is now catching silly mistakes by reviewing his work more carefully, leading to clearer handwriting and fewer errors overall.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Victoria Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Millen Primary School.
