I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

Second, a tutor should always give encouragement to the students so they are always positive when facing difficulties. In my opinion, I think my strength is I am patient. Even the students feel confused after few…

Provide a safe learning environment. Patience. Simple ways to explain complex problems. Adaptability. Motivation. Good listener. Confidence. Use questioning rather than…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help students build real confidence in their ability to take tests and trust what they know. Its not just about content, but helping them feel calm, prepared, and capable so they can actually perform under pressure. My strengths as a tutor are my genuine passion for teaching, my ability to break down…

Passing on knowledge keeping in mind the strength, weaknesses and the time required for the student to grasp the content that is being communicated. The teacher, I believe, should be a good friend and never intimidate the students, even if they lack the necessary skills to learn the subject quickly. Communication skills, level of patience,…

Tutors can help students develop the knowledge required for their schooling, but also help students develop the skills to learn efficiently and to a deeper level. This sets up good foundations for the future, if the student would like to study more in the future in the field, and will be helpful for future endeavors (university for example). I am…

Everything can be transformed if we can transform the brain and recreate those neural connections which will bring back creative intuition in your life. Tutors can be a reason to guide the students in the right direction. Sometimes, a student might need a tiny little nudge to get them on track and tutors can be or are the right persons for that. A tutor can be a friend guiding the student in every obstacle they come across. A tutor can also be a role model for the students by creating a long…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is tailor their teaching to the individual. Outside of a large class of students it becomes easier to change a lesson to suit a particular student, spending more time on a point when a student is struggling with it and ensuring that a topic is perfectly understood before moving on. I think…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help students become independent learners rather than making them dependent on the tutor. Inside St Kilda EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Anthony practised decimals, focusing on tenths and hundredths using visual models.

Year 9 student Ollie reviewed key skills from his end-of-year maths exam, including univariate statistics (like histograms and median) and perimeter/area of composite shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Leo worked through time series analysis and revised his recent test on regression analysis and data transformation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was observed repeatedly skipping written steps in algebra, saying "I can do this in my head"—but sign errors kept creeping in and took extra time to fix.

In VCE Maths, another student relied heavily on their calculator for financial questions but struggled when context required combining calculator results with written reasoning.

One Year 2 learner avoided learning single-digit addition facts, instead counting each time; as a tutor noted, "she uses counting to avoid knowing them." This led to slower progress and made more complex problems feel overwhelming when automatic recall would have helped.

Recent Achievements

One St Kilda East tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask questions, began coming to sessions prepared with her own list—now steering discussions towards what she finds tricky in maths.

In a recent high school session, another student who previously guessed at answers started openly seeking clarification on the difference between functions and relations, leading to genuine understanding.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once struggled to focus managed to factorise numbers independently for the first time and finished all practice problems without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yeshivah College.
