I would explain things until I am sure that the other party has fully understood the subject and feels confident about…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being prepared. I have had 1-1 Spanish tutoring in the past, and every week my tutor would arrive prepared with documents and interactive lessons, which were fundamental in enriching my learning of the subject and making the sessions more enjoyable. Additionally, the tutor needs to maintain…

A tutor is a guide who would be able to give personal learning experience to students which they might not be able to get during a school class. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to imagine herself in the shoes of student and then make learning process easier. Gaining the student's trust and then making student feel…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire a student to love what they are studying and enjoy the experience of learning. Excellence will surely follow after. I was a great Maths student in high school but struggled a bit in college. This taught me the value of simplifying concepts to the most basic elements for easier…

I have also helped pupils less naturally inclined to mathematics to achieve passing marks in critical exams which allowed them to pursue their academic careers in the direction they chose. I consider that the most important thing that you can do for a student is help them to see the use of the things that they are learning and make them understand why it is important to learn these things. Helping them to develop love for the subject, and this way it will be easier for them to develop a love for study in general. I think that my…

Patience and not comparing them with the others. I believe that each student has their own pace of learning. What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build a relationship with them. Listening to a student, assessing what areas they struggle with most, and celebrating the accomplishments they have made in their studies (whether big or small), is key in strengthening the student's trust in the tutor. In turn, this…

A tutor is more than a teacher. A teachers job is to give a student a base level of understanding whereas a tutor can build on that and go further. This allows students to revisit sections that the teacher brushed over or to build on sections they seemingly understand to ensure they can answer a greater range of question types. Along with the…

I think understanding that every kid is different and special in their own way, and they have their own needs and methods of approaching problems is very important. Every tutor should try to personalise the tutor session based on the needs, learning pattern and pace, interests and goals of the children so that they can make the most out of it. I…

I think the key thing a tutor can do for a student is ensure that their individual learning habits are in order, creating an essential degree of independence. Inside St LeonardsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Emily reviewed multi-digit addition and multiplication, then practised comparing and adding fractions using visual models.

Year 7 student Daniel focused on solving algebraic equations with unknowns on both sides, as well as building confidence in long division through step-by-step breakdowns.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Sarah worked through the expansion and factorisation of algebraic expressions and explored index laws, including why any number to the power of zero equals one.

Recent Challenges

In Year 5, a student hesitated to translate diagrams into equations during geometry tasks; as one tutor observed, "processing information when magnitudes of numbers are high" led to confusion in worded problems.

A Year 8 student showed reluctance to write out full algebraic working, which made it hard to spot calculation errors with negative numbers.

In senior years, several students in Years 10–11 missed key steps when factorising or simplifying indices—this sometimes resulted from over-reliance on cosmetic corrections and not responding to previous feedback.

During timed assessments, mistakes converting units (e.g., cm to m) slowed progress and eroded confidence.

Recent Achievements

One St Leonards tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 8 student who used to guess through long division but now confidently uses the "guess and verify" technique—he checks his steps, fixes errors on his own, and only asks for help when really stuck.

A Year 10 student recently began slowing down during algebra tests instead of rushing; this new habit has helped her spot mistakes before submitting work.

In a recent primary session, Caitlin, who previously hesitated with times tables, started reciting unfamiliar ones without prompting and explained how she checked her answers for accuracy.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greenwich Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like International Chinese School.
