The most important things a tutor can do are to be patient and kind. This will reflect well on the students because they might have a hard time learning a certain subject and need support through the way. My strengths as a tutor would be that I am very patient and understanding. These characteristics are strong for a tutor, as students learn in…

I would consider skills such as organisation, critical thinking and problem solving strategies to be the most valuable takeaways for the student, especially since the skills will always be useful long-term. I also think a tutor should be able to build up their student's growth mindset, giving the students the mentality and confidence to grow even…

I believe that it is important for a tutor to be so much more than what a teacher is. This involves building close bonds with their students to understand their academic needs so that tutoring sessions can be tailored specifically to the student. It is also extremely important for the tutor to always have a positive attitude and encourage their…

Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. On top of providing them with academic support and guidance that they can apply to other fields. For instance, how to structure an exemplar essay or simply how to construct a study timetable. Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to ensure that the child fully understands the lesson, and finds purpose in it. The tutor's first job is converting hard 'textbook language' to easy and illustrative concepts. The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are not only concrete plans and a sufficient level of knowledge, but also empathy to understand what the student needs and their natural ability. Inside St PetersTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Scarlett practised breaking up four- and six-digit numbers in non-standard ways to build place value understanding, and explored how rearranging digits changes number size.

Year 11 student Sam worked through algebra basics, graphing linear equations, and used the law of cosines to solve trigonometry problems involving similar triangles.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ella focused on quadratic equations—factoring and solving—and applied her knowledge to real-world contexts like calculating tax and depreciation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student expressed feeling overwhelmed by multi-step word problems, often unsure how to break them down; as one tutor noted, "she stated that she is often overwhelmed at all the information given to her."

In Year 10, missing key details in finance and algebra questions led to incomplete answers—skipped questions on a practice test remained unattempted until prompted.

For Year 11, not reviewing all test topics resulted in missed easy marks in rates and ratios, simply because those areas were set aside.

When reading exam questions too quickly in senior years, students lost points from overlooked instructions or misapplied formulas.

Recent Achievements

In Year 11, Kiera had struggled to confidently set up algebraic equations, but she filled out an entire interest table on her own after just a bit of prompting—she even tackled several practice test questions she'd previously avoided and got half of them right without guessing.

Raphael (Year 7) used to need help for every step with algorithms; now he completes most questions solo and explains his reasoning clearly when asked.

Meanwhile, Scarlett in Year 3 has started asking how to spell unfamiliar words instead of skipping them, showing new initiative during writing tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Peters / Sydenham Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peters Public School.
