I believe a tutor's role is to help students truly understand what they're learning, build their confidence, and develop skills they can use beyond the classroom. I'm patient and adaptable, and I take the time to explain concepts in different ways until they really make sense to the student. I try to create an encouraging space where they feel…

The most crucial quality of a tutor has to be the ability to not be afraid of the inquisitiveness of a student and handle each and every question with patience, to be able to empathize with the student in order to understand how you would want a person to respond to you if you were in the same situation. As a person who learns in and outside of…

A tutor can be the support for a student who’s struggling with their studies. They are neither their teach nor a parent that the child has to be self conscious around and can have a friendship with them giving the student a peaceful mind so they can give their full attention while being tutored. Tutoring can be challenging, especially when it comes to motivating your learner. You see the potential they have, and they often hear about the potential they have, but they do not feel as though they got what it takes. Living in such a busy and demanding time can often make us feel the time constraints on everything we do and we expect our…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instill a love for the subject within the student. Good tutors can effectively transfer their systems and approaches but if the student is not drawn into the subject they may less be inclined to do their homework or study independently which is as important or even more so than the…

Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, and it’s so important to adapt your teaching style to match that. I also think making the student feel comfortable is key — they should feel safe to ask questions…

I believe it's important for tutors to ensure that their students see them as a not only in a 'teacher' role, but someone they could look to advice if they ever feel the need - like a role model, or a mentor. Tutors should help their students gain confidence in their ability to achieve their goals, and by establishing small, achievable milestones…

Inside StrathfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jacob focused on advanced algebra, tackling worded problems ahead of class pace in maths and developing time-pressured writing and editing skills in English, including analysing text structure.

For Year 9, Amanda worked intensively on exam revision, targeting earlier-term maths topics for reinforcement and creating essays in English as part of her exam preparation.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Lily reviewed key numeracy concepts for NAPLAN by practising division and multiplication questions using sample test materials.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, Jacob struggled to translate strong verbal analysis into structured writing—his ability to discuss as proof of him being able to correctly form reasoning, however his confidence when it comes to writing heavily restricts this reasoning.

In mathematics (Year 8), a reluctance to consistently write working led to errors in algebra and worded problems; he often defaulted to solving mentally, which became overwhelming on harder questions.

For HSC Biology, one student included unnecessary details in short answers and missed key terminology, making it difficult for them to link concepts under exam pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Strathfield recently saw Jacob, a Year 8 student, move from avoiding written working-out to actively using it—now he tackles multi-step algebra and quadratic questions much faster than before.

In senior science, Luke showed new initiative by completing practice exam papers on his own without prompting, something he hesitated to do earlier in the term.

Meanwhile, younger student Burla made a noticeable shift in problem-solving: after initially needing lots of help with time word questions, she now reads them independently and selects the correct operation herself before asking for feedback.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burwood Library and Community Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Santa Sabina College, Santa Maria del Monte.
