The key benefit of a tutor is that they can provide individualised support for a student. Tutors have the unique position of being able to become very familiar with their students' understanding of subjects, and employ the most effective strategies to improve their learning. While teachers at students' schools often may not be able to allocate…

I believe a tutor's role is to help students truly understand what they're learning, build their confidence, and develop skills they can use beyond the classroom. I'm patient and adaptable, and I take the time to explain concepts in different ways until they really make sense to the student. I try to create an encouraging space where they feel…

To me, it is very important to make sure that my students are comfortable with the materials and the teaching speed, so they would be more willing to open up and learn, rather than pressuring them to study. I'm very flexible when it comes to teaching styles and communication. It has never occurred to me that one way of learning fit all. If I need…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is be patient and really take the time to understand how each student learns. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, and it’s so important to adapt your teaching style to match that. I also think making the student feel comfortable is key — they should feel safe to ask questions…

A tutor should have good listening skills so that they will better understand students' misconceptions and struggles. It is important to treat each student and how you go about emphasising the content to the students uniquely. A good tutor should aim to be relatable and open to share own experiences with learning and highlight that it isn't an…

I believe it's important for tutors to ensure that their students see them as a not only in a 'teacher' role, but someone they could look to advice if they ever feel the need - like a role model, or a mentor. Tutors should help their students gain confidence in their ability to achieve their goals, and by establishing small, achievable milestones…

A tutor is more than a teacher. A teachers job is to give a student a base level of understanding whereas a tutor can build on that and go further. This allows students to revisit sections that the teacher brushed over or to build on sections they seemingly understand to ensure they can answer a greater range of question types. Along with the…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student involve making the student understand the concepts at a deep level, rather than tutoring them solely for the purpose of achieving higher grades. Understanding is key in tutoring as adequate assistance would help a student to achieve their best potentials. Secondly, we as tutoring should make students…

Inside Canada BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Blake practiced using the OREO structure for persuasive writing and built vocabulary through word association games.

Year 7 Charlotte focused on mastering factor trees to break down numbers and then used these skills to solve square roots of larger numbers.

In Year 9, Angelique revised algebraic expressions by expanding and factorising them in preparation for an upcoming test, working through targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly forgot to submit homework, even after completing it—this left gaps in class discussion and slowed his writing progress.

As noted by a tutor, "he got distracted by his laptop during research tasks," which meant key questions were left unfinished.

In Year 10 English, a student rushed timed persuasive writing and missed important details, leading to weaker arguments under pressure.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student skipped re-reading passages in comprehension tasks, causing her to miss vital information; she often answered from memory instead of checking the text, making mistakes that could have been avoided with slower reading.

Recent Achievements

A Canada Bay tutoring session saw one high school student shift from relying on reminders about BODMAS to independently solving all her mixed-operation maths problems by the end of the lesson.

Another older student, who previously hesitated with Pythagoras' Theorem, now confidently finds missing triangle sides and checks if a triangle is right-angled without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner moved from avoiding tricky homophones to spelling them correctly and explaining their meanings aloud, after initially expressing doubt.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Concord High School.
