I think adapting to students learning style is vital to allow for the most growth in their education. Tutors are exceptionally valuable as the one on one or small class dynamics allow for the specific needs of a student to be catered for, giving their learning attention in a way that can be difficult to access within the schooling system alone.…

I think the key thing a tutor can do for a student is ensure that their individual learning habits are in order, creating an essential degree of independence. I have found it extremely valuable to ensure students develop a solid work ethic and understand how they can study effectively. In this sense tutoring plays a supplementary role, ensuring…

According to me, a tutor should first of all make the student realise that whatever he is going to teach is not hard but its very easy and try to make the concept simple that students who are weak in studies also understands it quickly. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them not only build the skills they need for the subject they're being tutored in, but also to build the skills to be confident of themselves within it as well. I think the most crucial part of any tutoring experience is to make sure that the student knows that the tutor is there for them and will not get frustrated if mess something up. If the tutor comes off as condescending or annoyed at a lack of progress, it can allow the student to put added pressure on him/herself or create an aversion to learning…

Fantastic help to my daughter across biology and maths. As well as the technical aspect has been brilliant for her confidence in the HSC year. Highly recommended.
Annie, Summer Hill

Inside Summer HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ruby focused on multiplying fractions by whole numbers and consolidating times tables knowledge.

In Year 8, Sam worked through solving trigonometric equations with domain restrictions and explored the general domain and range of functions using graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack practiced finding intersections of linear lines by solving simultaneous equations and reinforced skills in graphing linear equations accurately.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 trigonometry, skipping the combination of transformations and domain/range meant errors crept into graphing tasks—"struggled to combine and utilise both transformations," a tutor observed.

A Year 9 student repeatedly forgot algebraic simplification rules, especially when incorrectly canceling terms, slowing progress on simultaneous equations.

For a Year 6 learner, confusion about measurement conversions persisted; even after practice, confidence lagged when converting units in problem sets.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student hesitated to attempt worded problems independently and stayed quiet when confused in probability lessons. This led to missed opportunities for feedback and slower growth in reasoning skills.

Recent Achievements

A Summer Hill tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to get distracted is now working through macroeconomics discussion questions with genuine focus and is contributing ideas, not just listening passively.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to ask for help with simultaneous equations has started speaking up as soon as she's unsure—last session, she finished all her graphing problems without prompting.

In primary years, one student who would often guess at answers in maths is now stopping to check his reasoning out loud before moving on; last lesson he completed his entire perimeter worksheet correctly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashfield Municipal Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
