I think a chemistry tutor must help a student understand their work. A deep level understanding is good as it can give new perspectives to their work and to their endeavors. A surface level understanding is okay for replicating pre-set answers for a question, but a deeper understanding allows the person to view the question in a different way and…

I encourage and motivate students to excel and set a foundation for future studies, as well as providing an entertaining and educational environment suitable for each student. As a current student…

The most important thing I believe a chemistry tutor can do for a students is to instill self-confidence in the student because a student that is confident will be more resilient to adversity and be more likely to solve problems by themselves. My strengths would be that I have gone through the Australian school system and have encountered similar…

A good tutor not only finds the best teaching method to suit the learning preferences of their student, but are also able to increase their student's confidence and mindset, helping them be both physically and mentally prepared for assessments. I aim to set up a relaxed environment with the students so that students feel comfortable and focused working on subjects. Understanding the level the student is at, so that they are able to improve their skills at a suitable pace is essential. Next, providing worksheets, exams and textbooks so that they can continue improving by themselves,…

There a many key things that I believe a chemistry tutor can do to create a positive impact on their students. One of them I believe is for the tutor to be willing to share their knowledge in any area that the student is struggling with or wants some guidance in. I believe this is crucial as it is one of the main advantages of having a tutor in…

To improve a student’s level of knowledge. To help him when there is a misconception, or failure to conceptualize. To teach him methodologies and skills of study. For instance, what to put in an answer, and what to leave out, which is a common problem for most people. My depth of knowledge of a master degree in mech. Eng. I taught mechanical…

Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Understanding the frustrations that the student can have because they don't understand something, staying calm and patiently taking the student through the problem…

Be available when the student needs it and care about the student's goals as much or more than the student. By knowing what the student needs, a chemistry tutor can identify the student's weaknesses and target them creatively. Recognising when a student isn't properly understanding a concept and using several different approaches to clear it up.…

Study the student and know his or her pros and cons. I would say master the pros whilst teaching the pros. Divide the activities and show the student that learning isn't a burden its much of a relief at the end of the day because goals can be reached easier once you know better. I have done public speaking for as long as I can remember, so theres…

Not only unraveling inquiries on schoolwork, I believe it is important for them to understand the concepts behind a text or maths questions, such as correlated themes of a text. By offering a new perspective to students, a chemistry tutor does need a high level of patience to answer further questions. A tutor should also give honest feedback and…

Simply put, identify the gaps in knowledge that are preventing a student from understanding and mastering a concept and thus targeting them. Instead of getting students to memories how to answer certain question, teach them the process of answering a question. Why we do this and why this gets us the answer. I believe my strengths are specifically…

I believe that a chemistry tutor needs to communicate with the student about their needs. Inside TecomaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel practiced times tables for fluency and worked through adding and subtracting fractions, as well as reading 24-hour time.

Year 10 student Vien focused on developing ideas and a main argument for a practice English essay, along with reviewing sentence rewording and preparing for an upcoming SAC.

For Year 11, Isaac revised parabolic graphs by exploring the turning point form and also tackled basic trigonometry concepts using visual examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, one student hesitated to attempt original or critical responses in essay tasks—often narrowing quickly onto familiar ideas rather than brainstorming a range of examples. "He tended to zone in on one idea and struggled to see the bigger picture," noted the tutor, which limited depth in argument essays.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student preparing for Language exams often stuck with easy practice questions and delayed tackling unfamiliar syntax material, resulting in less effective revision sessions.

In primary maths, avoidance of complex worded problems led to missed opportunities for applying new strategies during lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Tecoma tutor noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who, after struggling with essay clarity, was able to compare two drafts and clearly see how her second attempt communicated ideas much more effectively.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to ask for help, now speaks up when she doesn't understand a topic and can explain past assessment answers in detail—a real shift from guessing quietly.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who used to second-guess his times tables is now recalling them quickly with flashcards and recently solved area and perimeter problems without any prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belgrave Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tecoma Primary School.
