The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen. A tutor's job is not to just teach the student, but to bring out the best of the student and a tutor cannot do that unless they listen to the student. A good tutor is not a tutor that had achieved exceedingly well themselves, although that is a part of it- it's about their ability…

Learning is a key to understanding and appreciating the complex beauty of life - enriching the life of the individual. It is one of the key foundations a tutor can establish for their students. A child who has failed to 'keep up' with learning, to understand a concept or course of study, will tend to drop further behind, and attempt to mask…

Encourage and empower the student to continue learning and believe that they can learn the content they are about to learn. I believe that offering support and further understanding into the subject in question is the most important role of a tutor. As a tutor, ensuring that a student's misunderstandings and queries in an area are explained and clarified is very important. Giving the student a deeper understanding to truly grasp a concept is core as a tutor. To…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students truly understand concepts rather than just giving them answers. A good tutor explains ideas clearly and is able to adjust their approach depending on how the student learns best. Great communication and really understanding the students way of learning. Whether it is visually or through notes, the tutor should be able to adapt the way he teaches based on the students capabilities and understanding. Also the ability to not make class boring or a drag, because the student is then uninterested and bored, which hinders their…

Inside TecomaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel practiced times tables for fluency and worked through adding and subtracting fractions, as well as reading 24-hour time.

Year 10 student Vien focused on developing ideas and a main argument for a practice English essay, along with reviewing sentence rewording and preparing for an upcoming SAC.

For Year 11, Isaac revised parabolic graphs by exploring the turning point form and also tackled basic trigonometry concepts using visual examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, one student hesitated to attempt original or critical responses in essay tasks—often narrowing quickly onto familiar ideas rather than brainstorming a range of examples. "He tended to zone in on one idea and struggled to see the bigger picture," noted the tutor, which limited depth in argument essays.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student preparing for Language exams often stuck with easy practice questions and delayed tackling unfamiliar syntax material, resulting in less effective revision sessions.

In primary maths, avoidance of complex worded problems led to missed opportunities for applying new strategies during lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Tecoma tutor noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who, after struggling with essay clarity, was able to compare two drafts and clearly see how her second attempt communicated ideas much more effectively.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to ask for help, now speaks up when she doesn't understand a topic and can explain past assessment answers in detail—a real shift from guessing quietly.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who used to second-guess his times tables is now recalling them quickly with flashcards and recently solved area and perimeter problems without any prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belgrave Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tecoma Primary School.
