I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond just teaching content. A tutor should help a child feel capable--- when students believe in themselves, everything else becomes easier. It's important to break concepts down simply, meet students where they are, and help them move forward step by step without overwhelm.…

Be their friend and role model. Students have already enough to deal with in school. They need someone to listen to them and help them to clarify all their doubts. In a nutshell, I think a tutor must be : --> A friend --> An academic trainer --> A mentor --> A planner As a tutor, i focus more on an overall development than just focusing on the…

Show effort. Regardless of the grades a student receives, I've noticed that effort never goes unnoticed by students. I have great patience and ability to communicate with all educational levels. I believe this has derived from my leadership roles across the past two years as these roles have required me to interact with students of all ages.…

To work with a happy and motivated student allows to improve and learn in a better way. That's why a good feeling with the child is very important. Making her/his problem as mine, I can reach a full engagement with her/him. The tutor must also show security, respect, motivation and passion. I can improve her/his skills for study in order to…

My dream is simple. I want to guide students in a way that goes beyond text books. It's not just about math or science, but the life skills like mindset, the joy of learning, and the art of studying. I believe every tutor should make learning feel a little fun, showing kids that it can be fun and that it isn't boring, which is what is important…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student believe in themselves. Of course, improving skills and understanding is essential, but confidence and motivation make the biggest difference long term. I would provide clear guidance, encouragement, and consistency, while helping students develop good learning habits so they become…

Building a caring relationship in my opinion is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. It is only that foundation can a tutor be able to deliver his best and at the same time the student will be keen to learn. It is the conducive learning environment that a tutor has to provide to enable the student to work to his/her maximum…

Listen. I think it's important to understand the current knowledge a student has and to be aware of what their goals are. I think each student has a different learning style. I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. I suspect that this may be hard for some students at first but I am confident that they will be able to get the most out of mathematics and other…

Having empathy, because not all content comes too easy for students as it does for us, obviously. Having patience, because it can be frustrating if a tutor just expects a student to "get it" immediately. Being kind. This seems obvious but you may be surprised the number of teachers I've had and met who are not kind, and they are extremely hard…

Developing a close relationship with students is essential in creating trust with a student. This allows a student to listen and follow your guidance. As a tutor, the most important thing to do is ensure the student is confident with their taught content. This is achieved initially by committing to your students work along-side them. Following…

Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. Inside The RocksTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Maya worked on plotting graphs and identifying x- and y-intercepts, as well as understanding linear relationships through visual examples.

Year 10 student Alex focused on solving advanced trigonometry questions from a recent test and reviewed polynomials in chapter 22b.1 for deeper algebraic skills.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily practiced expanding and factorising quadratic expressions before tackling worded problems involving algebraic fractions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student needed frequent reminders to finish written DI work and left parts of assignments incomplete, which led to confusion during revision.

In Year 11 English, reluctant to explain effect on audience and often did not link back to topic sentence, making it hard for ideas to develop into full arguments.

A Year 9 learner forgot key steps in long division and avoided double-checking, so errors persisted across sessions.

Another senior student was not fully prepared for the test on domain and range—missing notes meant time was spent re-learning rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One tutor in The Rocks noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who used to rely heavily on worked examples but now solves algebraic fraction problems independently, showing real independence.

A Year 12 student, after struggling to organise her ideas, managed to write a detailed speech plan unprompted—something she'd avoided before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who was hesitant to ask for help has started putting her hand up when stuck and recently read an entire short paragraph aloud with only one prompt for support.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Customs House Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre.
