I also consider a great tutor to be someone who builds a good rapport with their students and ensures a warm and friendly learning environment. Helping students develop self-confidence and improve study skills while also making them feel good about their accomplishments is also significant. In addition, I believe it is very important to be…

I would consider a connection to (and understanding of) the student to be the most important thing for a one on one tutoring relationship. Without a thorough understanding of their needs and situation, one cannot properly assess the best way to assist in their learning. I'm very personable, able to chat with anyone about almost anything. My high…

Honestly, the most important thing I believe I can do for my students as a tutor is offering and showing my support for them. Academic demands will get stressful and well, boring. Therefore, I personally believe that showing my presence and guidance will help them tremendously, both academically and emotionally. My strength as a tutor is the…

Helping students achieve their potential, adapting to kid's individual needs, building lasting relationships based on shared goals these are some of the impacts of a tutor on the student. But the most incredible aspect of tutoring is that it merges education and what is usually called enrichment. A good tutor can combine subjects in…

Being able to teach a student enough material for them to be able to pass the class, that is what you are being paid to do. There are also many ineffible qualities that will set apart a good tutor from a great one. Such qualities include, understanding the student, being supportive of them and their emotions and ensuring the student is effectively…

For me, it is absolutely pertinent for tutors to build a rapport and gain trust from their student, which may encompass many different actions. It may involve giving subject advice from experience, being reassuring and having sound knowledge of the course and content. In doing so, tutors can aid students to develop a genuine interest in the…

That is important because it is building the bigger picture of each subject in the long term. I am flexible in my teaching method, and I am able to adjust to each student depending on what they…

I think that being able to build a rapport with the student is one of the fundamental skills to be a good tutor. This lays the foundation for the student being comfortable in asking questions to the tutor, as well as the tutor finding a teaching style that is most suited to the student. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is ensure that the student has gained the ability to consolidate the information taught. A tutor should be able to communicate clearly with a student. It is important for a tutor to be patient with a student as different students learn at different paces. Lidia is a great match for my daughter. She is gentle and encouraging and my daughter has responded well to her tutoring. She has gained confidence and her attitude towards maths has really improved.
Sarah Marshall, Thebarton

Inside ThebartonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Mia focused on **solving linear equations** and practiced graphing using the gradient-intercept form, including identifying x- and y-intercepts.

Year 10 student Jack worked through **exponential graphs by sketching various forms and translating them** (including reflections), as well as reviewing log rules for simplification.

For Year 11, Priya tackled surds—specifically **simplifying expressions with both single integers and more complex denominators**—and discussed challenges around dividing surds.

Recent Challenges

Several students showed process-related obstacles across both primary and senior years.

In Year 8, one student frequently arrived late to lessons ("was also 10mins late to the lesson"), which meant less time for support on algebra basics.

A Year 12 student's working for compound interest questions was hard to follow; setting out multi-step solutions in a clearer format would have made back-checking possible when errors appeared.

Another senior student avoided reviewing past mistakes during exponential graph revision, so misunderstandings from previous lessons lingered into new material.

Distraction and inconsistent homework completion in middle years left gaps that resurfaced during mixed problem-solving tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Thebarton tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who had previously struggled with long division of polynomials manage to work through the process independently by the end of the lesson, after some initial confusion.

Another high schooler, who was often hesitant to speak up when unsure, started identifying areas from class where she felt lost and actively asked for extra practice—then successfully solved those questions on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student who used to rush through homework now takes time to back-check answers and explains her problem-solving steps aloud without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hindmarsh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St George College - Junior Campus.
