A tutor should help lead a student to get the deepest understanding of what they are learning, gain confidence, and then tailor their approach to how that individual learns. Tutors thereby ensure that the student understands concepts properly, promotes active learning and facilitates sustained academic well-being. I can simplify complicated topics…

As a tutor the most we can do for is a student is to encourage them to not just learn what's in the book but also to understand the concepts with a greater depth. The other thing that tutor can do for a student to maximise their educational growth is to try and make them understand the points where they are wrong and not just to do their work for…

A tutor should be able to communicate clearly with a student. It is important for a tutor to be patient with a student as different students learn at different paces. A tutor should be able understand the learning style of a student and have the ability to explain a concept in multiple ways to ensure that the student is confident with a concept.…

Understanding the student by listening carefully to them is important so you know the best way to help them with any problems. Having faith and trust in a student is also very important and enables them to build self confidence and trust within themselves and their ability to solve problems. Tutors must also tailor their teaching style to suit how…

The tutor's objective is not simply to relay information to a student in a bland or dry manner, but rather to establish a solid foundation and understanding for the students - to devise a teaching method that works best. The objective is for the student to learn in the most efficient and enjoyable manner. I am a University lecturer and a senior…

I believe that it is important for tutors to be passionate about teaching. This way, it is easier for the student to gain interest in the subject, which ultimately leads to better performance from the student as they are more motivated to study and learn. I also think that it is important for tutors to create a comfortable learning environment for…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is to pivot their teaching style in order to suit not only the content but how the student learns. Without this ability to change as necessary you are putting your students at a significant disadvantage. Breaking down complex concepts into simple ideas. The most important things a tutor can do could be split into two parts. Academically, tutors are there to help the student to learn all the knowledge required for them to achieve better grades. Spiritually, tutors are there as mentors, which they need to encourage the student to achieve their full potential, because usually due to exam pressure,…

The most important goal for a tutor is to spark students' interest in the subject. Tutoring is not only about assisting with a student's grade. According to me the most important trait in a tutor is patience. It is not necessary that each child learns at the same pace. A tutor should also possess the ability to create and provide problem statements which help the student to get a grip over the topic. Along with a good speaker a tutor must be a good listener making the session more…

One of the most important things I have realised over helping my friends in year 12 would be to walk through the question and not actually doing the question for the student. I strongly believe in the idea behind the saying, teach a person how to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime. Lidia is a great match for my daughter. She is gentle and encouraging and my daughter has responded well to her tutoring. She has gained confidence and her attitude towards maths has really improved.
Sarah Marshall, Thebarton

Inside ThebartonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Mia focused on **solving linear equations** and practiced graphing using the gradient-intercept form, including identifying x- and y-intercepts.

Year 10 student Jack worked through **exponential graphs by sketching various forms and translating them** (including reflections), as well as reviewing log rules for simplification.

For Year 11, Priya tackled surds—specifically **simplifying expressions with both single integers and more complex denominators**—and discussed challenges around dividing surds.

Recent Challenges

Several students showed process-related obstacles across both primary and senior years.

In Year 8, one student frequently arrived late to lessons ("was also 10mins late to the lesson"), which meant less time for support on algebra basics.

A Year 12 student's working for compound interest questions was hard to follow; setting out multi-step solutions in a clearer format would have made back-checking possible when errors appeared.

Another senior student avoided reviewing past mistakes during exponential graph revision, so misunderstandings from previous lessons lingered into new material.

Distraction and inconsistent homework completion in middle years left gaps that resurfaced during mixed problem-solving tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Thebarton tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who had previously struggled with long division of polynomials manage to work through the process independently by the end of the lesson, after some initial confusion.

Another high schooler, who was often hesitant to speak up when unsure, started identifying areas from class where she felt lost and actively asked for extra practice—then successfully solved those questions on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student who used to rush through homework now takes time to back-check answers and explains her problem-solving steps aloud without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hindmarsh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St George College - Junior Campus.
