I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is identify each student's individuality and therefore handle them uniquely, with utmost care and understanding. It is also extremely important for the tutor to be aware of verbal or behavioral feedback received from the student, and therefore be able to modify their teaching…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, make learning less stressful, and explain things in a way that actually makes sense to them. It’s also important to be patient, encouraging, and flexible, every student learns differently, so a tutor should be able to adapt to their needs and help them feel…

The most crucial thing a tutor can provide for a student is personalised guidance and support. This involves adapting the teaching method to the student's learning style and needs, recognising & addressing problems. A tutor should also inspire confidence in students and create a positive learning environment where questions are encouraged and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence while helping them develop genuine understanding. This means not just giving answers, but guiding them through the thinking process so they can solve problems independently. A good tutor also creates a supportive and structured environment, sets clear expectations,…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. Helping students find learning methods that work for THEM, which they can continue to use in the future is the most important thing, and also the most satisfying thing for me as tutor. My flexible teaching style means the student quickly feels comfortable and isn't afraid to ask…

The most important thing for a tutor is to be an individual that students can openly and freely talk to other than being able to give knowledge. Allowing students to feel understood helps them overcome thoughts of self doubt which can help further their advancement academically and to help them in their well-being. My strength is organising and…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to trust his student and teach him lessons as engaging as possible. Trusting student is very important as the student will gain more motivation when he or she is trusted. The lessons should be also engaging for the student to learn things pragmatically and also be motivated to learn more.…

As someone who has personally experienced anxiety due to academic pressure, I deeply understand how stress can block learning. My own struggles with grades have taught me that the most important role of a tutor is to create a safe, patient space where mistakes are welcomed as part of the process. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student, is to show the easiest method to learn the content of the subject. A tutor can teach the way to decode the subject matter. Once, the tutor teach the method to learn and the student understand that method, a student should become independent to learn similar topics. I think a tutor…

I think that being patient and empathetic are two of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Being an inspirational character. A tutor has to encourage his/her students always. During a semester/course, there will be certain times when students will lose interests for a poor mark (may be), or a personal problem. A tutor can't force a student to complete a session because it has to! A friendly approach can be helpful sometimes as well.…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence alongside their knowledge. Many students who struggle with maths and physics aren't lacking ability, they've just had a gap in understanding that knocked their self-belief. A good tutor pinpoints exactly where that gap is, explains it patiently in a way that makes sense to…

Inside ThornburyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Daniel focused on solving worded problems by translating real-life scenarios into mathematical equations and practiced skills with quadratic equations, including factorising and sketching their graphs.

For Year 11, Lily worked through probability concepts such as sample spaces, conditional probability, and the addition and multiplication rules, using tables to clarify multi-stage experiments.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Max tackled calculus topics by reviewing differentiation from first principles as well as applying derivative rules to interpret the meaning of slopes and turning points in functions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student reviewing organic chemistry sometimes skimmed over questions without fully checking charge states, as a tutor noted: "Needs to remember states and to check over charge of molecules."

In Methods calculus (Year 12), another student showed confidence but occasionally struggled to set out full working for integration constants, leading to uncertainty about final answers.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner tackling multi-digit subtraction would often forget to carry the one, making it tricky to spot where errors crept in.

During practice, the urge to finish quickly meant small details—like careful reading or stepwise calculations—were missed, resulting in avoidable confusion mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A Thornbury tutoring session saw a Year 11 student tackle trigonometric relationships independently, where previously he'd often paused or waited for hints before attempting these questions.

Another high schooler who used to get stuck factoring polynomials was able to complete almost all quadratic equations without any help, showing real self-sufficiency during revision.

In the primary years, one student who would hesitate over times tables managed to recall and write out their 9s with only minor prompting—something that's been a challenge in earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Northcote Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's School.
