I believe all educators need to be able to connect with students. My experience is that being able to build bonds of trust and goodwill goes a long way in opening students up to what you're teaching, as well as facilitating a comfortable environment where students not only learn, but enjoy doing so. I believe my past experience in education is my…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to boost up their confidence, because it's essential for the student to perform well under exam condition as well as during tutoring or class. And many students tends to lose focus, or go mind blank during exams due to a lack of confidence. In addition, it is extremely important for a tutor…

The most important thing is helping someone develop a passion for the subject so that they want to learn more. Studying for exams can get very stressful and students forget the joy of learning something and their natural curiosity. If a tutor can help a student retain even a small percentage of that, its an amazing achievement. Most of the…

A tutor should help students develop both understanding and confidence. This means identifying gaps in their knowledge, explaining concepts in a way that suits their learning style, and encouraging them to think independently rather than relying on answers. A tutor should, first and foremost, be amicable and trustworthy to students. This means that students should be able to confide in their tutors in the event that they are struggling to grasp matter, and, no matter how many times they ask, the tutor should provide the necessary assistance. I would say that my strengths as a tutor centre around my…

A good tutor should be several things. They are an accountability partner, a mentor in the area the student wishes to improve in, and they are also a source of inspiration for the student. Doing a couple questions in the lesson but not finishing the rest of the homework is not good enough. It is a huge success for a tutor to be able to encourage…

The most important thing a tutor could do for a student is show them that every student responds to education in the same way or at the same pace and whichever way they process information is perfectly normal. The goal is to maximize learning, in the way that works best for the students. I have seen this significantly reduce academic frustrations…

It is giving them understanding and proper pacing. You should first check the level of ability of the student and you should be the one to adjust to their level to ensure optimal learning. Helping students mentally through encouragement and giving them tips on how to thrive in any avenue of study and learning will benefit them far more than just learning a formula or…

Put yourself in the situation. Think about what you would do as someone who is supposedly better at tackling difficult problems if you stumbled upon the same question. Then convey your thinking to the student. I am patient and I am good at predicting what student may find difficult in a certain exam/test. I am also adaptive to individual dilemmas…

Genuinely understanding the students need and tailoring the best approach of teaching accordingly is the best thing a tutor can do. A tutor is solely responsible for shaping a students life. I consider the tutor to be committed in understanding what type of student he/she handles, since all of them aren't the same. Analyzing the talents of students and guiding them in a friendly way, will definitely motivate them to perform better. The teacher must be strong with the subject,…

Inside ThornleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Tahlia focused on calculating percentage increase and decrease, including real-life applications like mark up, cost price, and discounts, completing extra questions from her test book for practice.

Year 9 student Malissa worked on simplifying algebraic expressions and revisited the topic of surface area with targeted review based on her recent test feedback.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Hayes practiced division with remainders and applied BODMAS rules to fraction problems, before touching on area calculations for squares, rectangles, and circles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for linear regression relied heavily on calculator methods without showing working, which made it harder to spot small errors or check understanding.

In a Year 8 English session, Ryan received feedback on his writing but did not act on it before the next lesson; as noted, he did not put the feedback into practice yet, so similar issues reappeared.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student sometimes mixed up units and tens columns in multiplication, leading to off-track answers. This meant time was spent correcting basics instead of advancing to new skills.

Recent Achievements

A Thornleigh tutor recently noticed a big shift in Tahlia, a high school student who used to hesitate when she got stuck—she's now actively asking questions and working through tricky algebra problems instead of giving up.

Another win came from Ashton, also in high school, who scored 93% on his term test after weeks of focused revision; he tackled log, trigonometry, and simultaneous equations confidently this time.

Meanwhile, Hayes in primary school showed real diligence by completing all his assigned maths problems before moving on to extra challenges during their session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Pennant Hills Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Thornleigh West Public School.
