I think some of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is obviously, being able to lift their grades as well as instilling more self-confidence in them when tackling harder questions. Another more important thing is being able to act as a mentor to the student, and relay any important information that would be beneficial to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ignite their passion for a subject while also explaining concepts in a way that makes sense to them. This comes from deriving from a student's experiences and tying it into the subject in a way that the student will be able to understand, My strengths are the knowledge of the…

To ignite the students interest in a subject and help the student to do their best in a subject. By helping a student understand certain topics within a subject can lead to them finding an unknown passion within the subject. Us tutors can have the merit in sparking and driving the interest. A tutor should help students build/strengthen understanding and confidence, not just give them answers. A good tutor should encourage consistent effort and help students become more independent learners over time. Most importantly a tutor should be patient and should foster an environment where students are comfortable asking questions. One of my…

A tutor should be patient when a student is experiencing difficulties understanding the topic. When a student does not appear to be actively engaged, the tutor should take the initiative to support them. Finally, a tutor should be excellent at explaining difficult concepts to students. As a tutor, I am able to keep students interested and…

1) listen to the student and the parent. students should be the ones doing the most talking and asking questions. Tutors job is to listen to the student and give them the help they need 2) help the student gain confidence in maths but also in study in general. Often if a student improves in one area it also carries over to other subjects. The…

I believe the role of the tutor is the prepare the student for assessments and future content, as having a solid base is very important, specifically in maths where future content is built upon what is previously taught. For students to feel more comfortable stepping into an exam comes from familiarising them with what to expect and how to…

One of the important things a math tutor can do for students is constantly testing them with the knowledge they have already absorbed in the past. Questions need to be changed, but concepts need to be practiced repetitively. The other important thing tutor can do to help students is organizing notes. As tutor, answering kids' questions kindly and patiently is one of the most important things. It is also important that we check with them if they understood the topic. Inside ThornleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Tahlia focused on calculating percentage increase and decrease, including real-life applications like mark up, cost price, and discounts, completing extra questions from her test book for practice.

Year 9 student Malissa worked on simplifying algebraic expressions and revisited the topic of surface area with targeted review based on her recent test feedback.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Hayes practiced division with remainders and applied BODMAS rules to fraction problems, before touching on area calculations for squares, rectangles, and circles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for linear regression relied heavily on calculator methods without showing working, which made it harder to spot small errors or check understanding.

In a Year 8 English session, Ryan received feedback on his writing but did not act on it before the next lesson; as noted, he did not put the feedback into practice yet, so similar issues reappeared.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student sometimes mixed up units and tens columns in multiplication, leading to off-track answers. This meant time was spent correcting basics instead of advancing to new skills.

Recent Achievements

A Thornleigh tutor recently noticed a big shift in Tahlia, a high school student who used to hesitate when she got stuck—she's now actively asking questions and working through tricky algebra problems instead of giving up.

Another win came from Ashton, also in high school, who scored 93% on his term test after weeks of focused revision; he tackled log, trigonometry, and simultaneous equations confidently this time.

Meanwhile, Hayes in primary school showed real diligence by completing all his assigned maths problems before moving on to extra challenges during their session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Pennant Hills Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Thornleigh West Public School.
