I believe that since every student is different in the way they think and learn, it is important for a tutor to establish a connection and relationship with their students so the tutor can better understand the students habits. This would allow the tutor to better tailor their lessons towards the student so they learn and understand better. I have…

I believe one of the most important things I can do for a student is help them develop the confidence and skills to learn independently. Rather than simply giving them answers, I want to help students understand why a method works, recognise where they are struggling and develop strategies for approaching unfamiliar problems. I also think it is…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build confidence, foster understanding, and encourage independence. A tutor should create a safe and supportive space where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. It’s also essential to identify each student’s learning style, tailor explanations…

A tutor can encourage a student to better themselves, to reach simple goals and then challenge them further to be the best. I feel achieved when the student starts asking complex question as the day passes by, to the point where you have to give the answer a second thought. And that is when I know i have achieved being an excellent tutor. I…

A tutor in my perspective must be flexible and must be willing to offer any form of support, I.e. helping solve problems, explain concepts in detail, clear misconceptions, etc. Also it is important always maintains a positive attitude and encourages students to learn more. I also think a tutor should be able to provide their students with the…

The most important thing that a tutor should do is teaching student how to study efficiently, instead of just give them questions to do and mentioning about the content. Try best to explain the content and help them to learn more. Try my best to arrange my time and planning my class, be patient to student to explain all contents and have a wide…

Tutor can be patient with their student and let them learn at their pace. Also, I believe a tutor should NEVER spoon fed but rather act like a mentor, guiding and helping if and only where it is required. I'm patient with students and understand that each student is different and have their own learning pace. I take pride in my ability to break…

I believe tutors exist to help extend the foundations of what students are taught in schools, whether it be through analysing old concepts with a finer view or reinforcing newer concepts with carefully selected examples and analogies. I believe I am quite capable of exercising patience when a student is trying to understand the subject, trying to…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to provide encouragement and maybe change their perspective on a subject that may seem difficult and overwhelming, to know they can achieve success in that subject. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to persevere in times of academic adversity. This is because if a student cannot believe in themselves, they won't be able to achieve their true capabilities. Only after this encouragement can students reach for the stars. My strength as a tutor involves my position as a…

To give the student the tools to learn independently, without the assistance of the tutor, and the tools to conquer a problem, or problem set, with a technique that is unique to their own strengths. In my opinion the most important thing a tutor can do is make sure that the student truly understand the various concepts taught. From my experiences and a tutor and a student, a tutor should never make their lesson feel daunting and uninviting. For example focusing only on heavy amounts of homework can be very off putting for a student. A tutor should be encouraging the student to enjoy the subject they are teaching, because the more enjoyable it is to the student the more…

A tutor should provide guidance and assistance at all costs for the student they are teaching. It is the tutors responsibility to do the best they can in order to help the student reach their potential. Explain. If a tutor can explain a concept in a way a student can understand and then is able to remember it and be able to apply it, the tutor has succeeded in his role. Also being able to listen to students, as a tutor should be able to find small mistakes and correct them as questions require perfection to some degree to achieve maximum marks.…

Inside ToongabbieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Aman focused on solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, and also practised graphing linear equations from given formulas.

Year 11 student Grace revised differentiation techniques for trigonometric functions as part of the Stage 6 Maths Advanced calculus curriculum, then moved to integration problems involving exponentials and logarithms.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Priya tackled Financial Mathematics by calculating compound interest and worked through sequences in arithmetic series, reinforcing these with targeted exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student's tendency to copy notes too quickly led to missing signs—"he would be copying notes but miss a sign or two because he go past too fast"—resulting in confusion when factorising expressions.

For a Year 11 trigonometry graphing task, another struggled with interpreting questions that were "a little wordy," making it harder to tackle exam-style problems without pausing to fully read instructions.

In both cases, the urge to rush or avoid careful reading meant extra time was spent fixing errors rather than building fluency with more challenging material.

Recent Achievements

During a Toongabbie tutoring session, Grace, a high school student, tackled her recent exam with noticeably greater independence. She earned most of her marks in financial mathematics and statistics after previously hesitating on multi-step problems.

Another tutor noted Oliver, also in high school, who now solves financial calculation questions quickly and confidently, having struggled before to select the right formulas without prompting.

Meanwhile, Isaac in Year 6 has started asking clarifying questions about his assignments rather than waiting for hints. This shows a real shift from passive participation to active engagement during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Constitution Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anthony's Primary School.
