The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, from my point of view, is to not only teach them but also be their friend/ally. A tutor should be someone the student feels safe and comfortable with, and can go to for advice, educational or otherwise. I think this develops not only a better understanding between tutor and student, leading to…

Understand their individual needs, as the reason most children may seek a tutor is because their teachers cannot give them enough specific support. I am flexible in the manner in which I can teach, allowing me to help many different people that may not get individualised teaching through their school. I am patient, I never rush those I'm teaching,…

A tutor should listen to students and always clearly explain anything, and check to see if the student understands. A tutor should also celebrate successes with the student, or support them if they are disappointed with results and reassure them that they can improve. Allow the student to fully understand the concept, not instruct them how to complete set questions 1 by 1. If the tutor can explain how it works at a fundamental level, then work their way up to be able to answer questions then it can more easily be used as a foundation for any question I heard the saying "If you can't explain something simply,…

I think its so important to show the students that you care about them and their achievements, and that you believe in them. Sadly, some students won't have this at home, and it can give them so much confidence to push themselves and believe in their academic goals. The most important thing would be to teach them, not only how to understand and do well in a test, but how to achieve highly in life. This can be achieved by linking the student's interests to the lesson being tutored. As I am doing a Masters of Teaching at university, I believe I have this strength. I would also see myself as charismatic…

I believe it is important for a tutor to understand each individual student's learning style, and hence approach each student's teaching in the manner which best benefits them. It is also important for a tutor to be patient, open and honest, and always listen keenly to what his/her student has to say. My strength as a tutor lies in my abstract…

Inside TuerongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Finn revised Index Laws in preparation for an upcoming test and began developing note-taking techniques, later moving on to probability notation and interpreting outliers, measures of centre, and spread in statistics.

Year 9 student worked through plotting linear equations and finding their slope and intercept using both equations and graphs. Another Year 9 session focused on drawing line graphs from equations and determining x- and y-values, practicing with real data points for accuracy.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's notes in algebra revealed a tendency to avoid writing out full working, with one tutor commenting, "he skipped showing steps in equations, which hid sign errors." This habit made it harder to spot and fix mistakes, especially when revising.

In Year 11, another student struggled with notetaking—his work on index laws often lacked clear step-by-step examples, so reviewing concepts later became confusing.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student was encouraged to "write out bigger problems rather than relying on working them out in her head," as mental calculation sometimes led to lost steps and unnecessary errors mid-solution.

Recent Achievements

One Tuerong tutor noticed a big shift in Finn, a high schooler who used to stay silent but now regularly "talks aloud" through problems and grabs pen and paper on his own without prompting—he even started tackling data summary questions independently.

In another session, Riley made clear progress with algebra: after weeks of struggling, he can now expand brackets confidently and solve nearly any linear equation without second-guessing.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently surprised her tutor by scoring 100% on her 7x tables after practicing new memorisation strategies she'd previously found overwhelming.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mornington Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Balcombe Grammar School.
