What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
What I enjoy the most about tutoring is getting the tutee to that "eureka" moment: that moment you have when you're studying where everything clicks and you finally understand the problem or concept. I always found that feeling amazing in my personal study, but I find it especially amazing when I help other people get to that point.
I think another thing I liked about tutoring previous are the things it teaches me. Learning how to level with people, without making them feel small or dumb, is an important skill not just in tutoring but communication in general.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I think my greatest strength as a tutor is my patience. Part of the fun with tutoring is understanding the learning patterns of your tutee: what methods they respond to the best. It's like a puzzle, and the enjoyment I get from solving it lengthens my patience when I tutor.
Another one is I have a lot of (informal) experience tutoring my classmates and my sibling. It used to be another way I would study for tests or exams, but I picked up some useful lived experience that I used up until now.
I also like to think I'm great with kids, at least back home in the Philippines.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
I think the most important thing a tutor can do is not give their tutees the answer, but give their tutees ways to get to the answer. Teaching students how to understand problems at a fundamental level, break them down into parts they can individually understand and then piece together, ideally all on their own.
This kind of critical thinking has helped me tremendously in my academic career. Beyond academics, critical thinking skills are highly applicable to things in the professional or even personal sphere. That is why I always wish to impart these skills on the people I tutor.
