What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

A student I used to tutor struggled with basic algebra and arithmetic as a high schooler. After completing a problem, he could not figure out how to start the next one despite it requiring the exact same algebraic steps. One day, however, after we identified the source of the issue, he completed an entire problem set independently. The pride radiating from his face underscored, for me, the importance of my work. It also reminded me why I love tutoring and working with children.

My Strengths as Tutor 💪

I am a very patient person, which is what I think makes me a good tutor. There are some students who do not understand the prompt immediately, or struggle time and time again to complete a problem. This then activates the creative part of my brain, thinking about different ways I can approach the problem so that the student can better understand how to solve it.

Most important things I can do for a student 🏅

To boost confidence. Most likely, tutors will not teach a student a lot of new information. For subjects like math, students instead take what confuses them in school, and drill it over and over with a tutor until it becomes second nature. For English, tutors can help students create outlines, double check their work, and make sure they are on the right track. Students can also ask tutors questions they may be too scared to ask their teachers. My main goal for a student is for them to return to school the next day confident in their ability to answer questions and solve problems.
