What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
When a student understands something that they were previously struggling with. I encountered this when I was supervising undergraduate students in their laboratory class. I was able to detect when the students didn't fully understand something, and work with them, step by step, until I was convinced that they did, which was a great feeling.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
Picking up on when a student might not understand something, even if they aren't saying it. Breaking down problems into steps and not giving away the answer straight away: instead, guiding the student through how to think about each step, until it clicks. Patience: I can work at whatever pace is most appropriate for the student. Clear communication.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
Giving a student the time and attention they need to ensure they can fully understand difficult concepts. In school (and university), there were many concepts in maths and physics that I struggled with. Asking the teacher sometimes worked, but often in a busy class they couldn't give me the time I needed to talk through exactly what I was struggling with at my own pace. Other times, I still wouldn't understand, but would be too embarrassed to ask again. I think working with a student at their own pace to maximise understanding is very valuable.

About James
PhD-trained physicist who makes maths feel manageable
James is a PhD-trained physicist who uses his deep mathematical background to make tricky ideas feel straightforward for school students. Through years of research and teaching, he has built a strong command of algebra, calculus and problem-solving, and knows how to break problems into simple, logical steps. This tutor focuses on understanding rather than rote memorisation, helping students see the “why” behind methods so they can tackle new questions with confidence, not just repeat learnt procedures.
Experienced mentor from primary school workshops to university labs
James has guided learners at many stages, from supervising university lab classes to supporting primary and secondary students in hands-on science workshops. He has run one-on-one and small-group sessions where he adapts explanations to different ability levels and learning styles. Earlier voluntary work supporting students with additional needs and leading Cub Scouts shows he is comfortable engaging younger learners, keeping lessons structured but relaxed, and building focus through clear routines and encouragement.
Clear communicator who brings learning to life
Outside formal teaching, James runs a popular online physics education platform with tens of thousands of followers, creating short, engaging explanations of complex ideas. This experience means he is skilled at spotting where students get stuck and using analogies, visuals and step-by-step reasoning to unlock understanding. He enjoys weaving in puzzles, real-world examples and even a bit of chess-style strategy to build problem-solving skills, so students not only improve their marks but also start to enjoy the challenge of maths and science.
