What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
I enjoy the moment when a concept clicks for a student, when you can see their confusion turn into genuine understanding. Having studied a broad range of subjects myself, from physics and mathematics through to English literature, I find it rewarding to show students that these disciplines aren't as intimidating as they first appear. I particularly enjoy the challenge of finding the right explanation for each individual student, since no two learners think the same way.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I think my biggest strength is being able to move between the technical and the conceptual. My physics and mathematics background means I can guide students through rigorous problem-solving, but my English and literature training means I can also communicate clearly and structure explanations in a way that actually makes sense to the student in front of me. I'm patient and adaptable, and I focus on building understanding from first principles rather than just teaching students to memorise methods, which I think leads to much more durable results and genuine confidence.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
I think the most important thing is to make the student feel safe enough to not know something. A lot of students come in having already decided they're "bad at maths" or that physics is beyond them, and breaking down that anxiety is half the battle. Beyond that, I think a good tutor builds independence. The goal should always be for the student to need you less over time, not more. That means teaching problem-solving strategies and ways of thinking, not just working through the answers together.

About Fergus
Mathematics & Physics Tutor | BSci/BA (Hons I) Physics, English Literature, University of Sydney
I graduated from The Friends' School with an ATAR of 99.05 before completing a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Advanced Studies with First Class Honours in Experimental Physics and English Literature at the University of Sydney. I now work as a Research Associate at the University of Sydney's Quantum Integration Laboratory, where my day-to-day work involves advanced mathematical modelling, data analysis, and rigorous physical reasoning across exactly the disciplines that underpin Extension 2 Mathematics and HSC Physics. What makes my tutoring different is the combination of genuine technical depth and the ability to explain it clearly. I build understanding from first principles rather than teaching methods to memorise, which means results that hold up under exam pressure and confidence that lasts. I am patient, adaptable, and focused on making each student think independently rather than rely on a tutor to carry them through.I am attentive to each student's individual needs and adapt my approach accordingly.
Outside of work I consider my self to be creative and be a person of integrity who loves to explore outdoors through surfing, climbing and bushwalking.
I look forward to working with you!
