What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
I love the moment when a concept clicks for a student, when confusion turns into confidence. There's something deeply rewarding about breaking down complex maths problems into manageable steps and seeing a student go from "I don't get it" to "I can do this."
What keeps me coming back is the impact: watching students improve their exam scores, reduce anxiety around maths, and develop genuine problem-solving skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I'm patient and adaptable. Every student learns differently, so I tailor my approach, whether that's visual diagrams, step-by-step walkthroughs, or real-world applications. I also stay calm under pressure, which matters when students are stressed about upcoming exams.
I'm organised and thorough. I track student progress, identify knowledge gaps early, and design targeted homework that reinforces weak areas. My background with VCE General Maths and Mathematical Methods means I know exactly what exam boards expect.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
Build confidence and identify root causes. Many students struggle because of foundational gaps or misconceptions, not lack of ability. Once I pinpoint where understanding breaks down, I can deliver targeted help that actually sticks.
The other half is fostering independence, my job is to teach students how to think through problems, not create dependency. If I've done my job well, they shouldn't need me.

About Mateo
Making Maths Click
I'm a Bachelor of Commerce and Actuarial Science student at Monash University with over three years of tutoring experience and more than 40 students taught across Years 1–12. I graduated VCE with an ATAR of 92.6 and raw study scores of 45 in Mathematical Methods and 40 in Specialist Maths, so I know exactly what it takes to succeed at the top end of high school maths — and I know how to help students get there without the stress.
Every Student Learns Differently
No two students think about maths the same way, so I don't teach that way either. I focus on identifying where the confusion actually is, then rebuild the concept from the ground up in a way that makes sense to that specific student. My goal isn't just better marks — it's students who can tackle unfamiliar problems on their own, feel confident walking into an exam, and eventually not need a tutor at all.
Beyond the Textbook
Outside of tutoring I'm a competitive swimmer and triathlete, and in 2025 I ran the 42 km Nike Melbourne Marathon during my Year 12 VCE, raising over $900 for Running for Premature Babies. Balancing full-time study, sport, and tutoring has taught me a lot about discipline, time management, and staying calm under pressure — habits I try to pass on to every student I work with, whether they're chasing a top ATAR or just trying to feel less lost in class.
