What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
I have not tutored in the traditional sense, but the mentoring work I do through Bridgelaw has given me a good sense of what I would enjoy about it. What I like most is the moment a student stops treating you like someone who just has answers and starts actually engaging with the problem themselves. With the students I mentor through Bridgelaw, that usually shows up when we go from talking about what law school involves to them asking sharper, more specific questions, the kind that tell you they have actually started thinking it through rather than just absorbing what I have told them.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I think my biggest strength is patience, in the sense of being able to sit with someone while they get something wrong a few times before it clicks, rather than jumping in too early. That has come through clearly in the mentoring I do through Bridgelaw, where a lot of the job is resisting the urge to just give someone the answer.
I also think I am a fairly clear communicator, which sounds obvious but is not always the same as knowing a subject well. Competing in Model United Nations and debating for years, and more recently winning Best Floor Address at a university conference, has trained me.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence, not just their content knowledge. A lot of students who are struggling are not actually behind, they have just started to believe they are, and that belief gets in the way more than any gap in understanding does.
Beyond that, I think a good tutor notices where a student is actually stuck rather than where you assume they are stuck, and adjusts the explanation accordingly instead of repeating the same one louder. And consistency matters more than people expect. Showing up prepared every session and tracking progres
