What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
It's honestly that moment when something finally clicks for someone. Boarding at school meant I ended up helping the younger years with their homework most afternoons, anything from maths to accounting and business management. To me, there's a specific kind of satisfaction in watching someone go from stuck and frustrated to actually getting it on their own. I try not to just hand over the answer, but walk them through the logic so they can do it themselves next time. I also like the one-on-one side of it as it's a lot easier to spot exactly where someone's getting confused.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I'd say my biggest strength is being able to explain the same thing a few different ways until one of them actually lands rather than just repeating myself louder. I learnt pretty quickly that people take in information differently so you have to adjust to the person in front of you rather than sticking to one script. I'm also patient, and reasonably good at picking up on when someone's lost but too embarrassed to say so. On a more practical note, I'm organised and reliable, and I speak English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Japanese so I can tutor across languages if that's ever useful.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
I think building their confidence matters just as much as building their knowledge as a lot of students who are struggling have already convinced themselves they're "just bad" at the subject and that mindset needs undoing before the content even sinks in. Beyond that, a tutor should listen to where a student's getting stuck instead of assuming, be consistent so the student can rely on them, and know when to let them work through something themselves versus when to step in. I also think it's worth teaching students to ask for help before they fall too far behind rather than simply waiting.
