What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
The ah moment when a student finally understands the concept and process rather than merely how to find an answer and the resulting confidence and flow that results.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
Paying attention to the small things that make maths (or English) learning enjoyable or not for a student. For example, I asked one student (who had cycled through a few other tutors but wasn't engaging with them) what his favourite number was. He said it was 42, because that is the number his cousin always wears in the AFL. So I just tried to incorporate that number and those details into any impromptu question I gave him. In other words, making learning enjoyable and specifically relevant to them in a way that doesn't necessarily happen at school.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
Finding the gaps, especially when they are gaps from prior in the scaffolding process that will only amplify over time. Sometimes it is important to take a step or two backwards in that case and often that results in a quicker grasp of current concepts.
