I firmly believe that a tutor should not only share knowledge but also inspire a love for learning. Building a strong mentor-student relationship is crucial, nurturing an environment where questions are encouraged, and challenges are viewed as opportunities for growth. Also, tailoring teaching methods to suit individual learning styles, and…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, foster independent thinking, and create a safe, supportive space for learning. A tutor should go beyond simply explaining content they should help students develop problem-solving skills, effective study habits, and a deeper understanding of the subject. It's…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel welcome and build their confidence by acknowledging their progress no matter how small it is. It is also crucial for a tutor to recognize that everyone learns differently and adapt their teaching styles accordingly. Having finished high school just about two…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help the student become **independent in their thinking**. It’s easy to just show solutions, but that creates dependency. A good tutor instead builds the student’s ability to approach problems on their own—how to think, how to break things down, and how to recover when they’re stuck. That…

As a tutor, you can help a student realise their potential. It is so important for students to become confident in their abilities. I believe tutoring can assist in this and allow students to perform to the best ability. I am a very communicative and patient person. A tutor has the opportunity to encourage confidence in students. Not solely confidence that they can achieve highly, but confidence that they can give anything a go and learn and improve as they do. A tutor can present things in an engaging way to encourage the student to be open-minded to things they may have discounted because they seem…

Listen. Every student excels in some ways and does not in others. This emphasises the importance for a tutor to present ideas in ways which allow the student to learn them in the most efficient and effective ways. This also ensures that the tutor does not repeat anything the student already knows and identifies what the student has yet to learn. -…

I believe it is important to understand the student's weaknesses and strengths before starting to teach them. I have come across a common problem with students, which is that they often jump straight into trying to solve a problem without fully understanding the theory/basics first. Hence, I try to first help them understand the basics then go…

Primarily, a tutor needs to be a good listener. Listen the problems of an individual carefully and provide the solution. Tutor can be a mentor not only of the academic but can be a mentor of other emotional and mental problems. Patience is the baby step to become an effective tutor. Some children might need patience levels that may put me through…

As a tutor the most we can do for is a student is to encourage them to not just learn what's in the book but also to understand the concepts with a greater depth. Facilitating learning for students and empowering them to overcome their obstacles. A tutor needs to be an activator of knowledge and not a proxy to solve problems. I consider the ability to communicate in the student's eye level to be the essential as a tutor. I think the best tutor is one who guides the students properly and fairly not only in their academics but also about life challenges. Tess is tutoring my daughter, Zoe, in Year 7 Maths. Although we are early in the journey Zoe has already gained confidence in her ability. Tess helps her feel comfortable and confident that she can achieve her goals. I am very pleased that I have Tess to assist Zoe and provide her with the support she needs.

Inside UnderdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emma worked on recognising and ordering decimal numbers, as well as rounding decimals to the nearest tenth.

In Year 8, Jack focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions using brackets, along with solving worded problems by rearranging equations to find x.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sarah tackled trigonometry skills such as using sine, cosine, and tangent ratios to solve for unknown sides in right-angled triangles, applying these methods to homework and real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, a student avoided integrating quotes into sentences, which made their arguments less persuasive; as noted, "she can work on clearly explaining why [quotes] support her arguments."

In Year 8 Maths, skipping steps when calculating the surface area of complex shapes led to confusion and lost marks—one tutor observed that "missing a step… is vital to the accuracy of the answer."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student mixed up numerator and denominator when saying fractions aloud, making it difficult to check understanding in class.

In all cases, these habits left students second-guessing their answers or hesitating during independent tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Underdale tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after weeks of struggling to rearrange linear equations, was able to independently find the equation of a line from two points and even completed her homework with barely any help.

In another session, a high schooler working on science reports moved from being unsure about interpreting experimental data to confidently using advanced scientific language in her practical report write-up.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to rush through reading is now pausing to re-read sentences for meaning and starting to use a dictionary during lessons without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Thebarton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nazareth Catholic College - St Gabriel Centre Campus.
