What I consider to be the most important thing for a tutor to do for a student is to help them understand and consolidate concepts they are struggling with through a personalised experience by targeting their own learning method. Additionally, it is very important to increase their confidence in their learning capabilities by teaching them skills…

I believe the most important thing is to explain in a way that the student understands. For example, with some of my students I would use a lot of analogies to help them get an initial grasp of a concept, whereas with others I will explain the underlying principles of a topic in great detail, as thats what helps that specific student understand a…

First and the foremost is that, the tutor must understand the level of teaching, because it varies with the student. Each and every student have different capabilities and understanding level, so the foremost job of teacher is that they must understand the student and level and set their strategy accordingly. One of the most important things that I think a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and be willing to share the knowledge and experiences with the student. It is important to let students know that they are not alone when they encountered any difficulties and tutor is not annoyed. Tutor will always be there when he/she needs help in…

From my point of view, identifying students' ability is most important as the effective learning always occur when they work on the zone of proximal development, the difference between what a learner can do without help, and what they can't do. If both teachers and students work within it, the success is almost guaranteed. I think the students…

A tutor is one should provide their students with reliability, feelings of safety and comfortability when teaching them. Besides helping students to improve students knowledge, skills and grades at school, tutors should be the ones who inspire students to learn harder and be a better version of themselves as a student. My strength as a tutor is…

I believe it is important for tutors to build students' confidence and boost their self-esteem. It is important to acknowledge that a student is doing well when they truly are; to encourage them to be resilient when it gets tough. This way students are able to conquer any challenge without fear which enables them to learn more effectively. This…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to guide them towards the right path in their studies. This may include productive habits such as doing homework or even something as simple as asking for help when they're stuck. Instilling habits like these will enable them to move on their own once they're older. I consider myself to be…

To make the students be clear of the basics which helps the students in the long run and also to be polite with them as not all students have the same level of understanding, and each student has different pace at which they learn so we need to give them as much time as possible to learn better. In my opinion, the most valuable thing that a tutor can do for the student is to bring his/her interest to learn about anything in academic subjects. Most of the students nowadays are more keen on social media postings and playing online games. Sometimes, they forgot how important the academic knowledge in their lives. So, bring back the student's…

All students learn and understand in different ways; some are visual learners, others learn best off a textbook etc. Therefor the most important thing a tutor can do is to be understanding and patient, especially when the student doesn't understand something. I also find it easy to teach someone in different ways…

Inside VillawoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Adam worked on adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers.

In Year 9, Sarah practised solving linear equations and inequalities, using graphing techniques to visualise solutions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jacob focused on surds and indices—including rationalisation—and tackled probability problems under exam-style conditions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly left homework incomplete, which led to confusion with formula recall during volume and area tasks; "she does not do her homework on the regular—this results in a lack of memory pegs," noted one tutor.

In Year 10, another student relied heavily on their calculator for basic arithmetic in algebra questions, missing opportunities to build mental fluency.

For a senior student working through complex surds and indices problems, unclear written working made it difficult to spot errors or understand reasoning upon review. This often resulted in extra time spent deciphering steps instead of progressing with revision.

Recent Achievements

One Villawood tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask questions—she now regularly pauses mid-problem to check her understanding, instead of pushing through in silence.

In Year 11 chemistry, another student made clear progress moving from confusion about endothermic and exothermic reactions to confidently explaining the difference and identifying examples on their own during revision.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who struggled with division last term has started memorising key steps and can now complete short division problems independently without prompts from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chester Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.
