One of the most important things a tutor can do is be patient and supportive. Different people learn different things in different ways, and at different rates. A tutor must cater for that, and not skip over important things that students have not yet understood. A tutor must use the method of explaining/teaching that students will understand. I…

I believe being cheerful and determined as well as encouraging will keep students motivated to learn continuously. Some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is ensuring that the student knows the content that has been taught. Also make sure that you are listening to the student and try to minimise their weaknesses and maximise their strengths. As a tutor, my strengths are being confident and only speaking what I know of. I will only teach…

From my experience I noticed that there are students who still hold their voices at school when they have a doubt due to several factors. Once they are comfortable with a tutor, they are more open to questions in their mind and try solving them one on one with the tutor. On this note, I find being a tutor amusing as I always find solving their…

It's not just about teaching concepts, but helping the student believe in their own ability to understand and apply them. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students feel safe to try, fail, and grow. Many students come into tutoring thinking they are "just bad at maths," and it's our job as tutors to help break that mindset. From my own experience, I know how powerful it is when someone takes the time to understand your gaps, explain things at…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to allow their minds to create their own version of knowledge rather than just gaining a pre-existing idea. It's only when we challenge the students to think out of the box that they actually start realising the importance of what was in the box. Giving them a vivid imagination can be a…

Having the patience and being a good listener. Having the two is what I believe where you can start building a better relationship with the student. By listening carefully to the student and also being patient with them (since people learns at different speed and different methods). From there, I can understand students in their area of weakness…

By helping them get a good grip of the foundation of the subject or topic. This is why I enjoy tutoring as well, as it lets me revise. Another important quality…

Inside Wantirna SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Zoey worked on rearranging algebraic expressions for graphing and solving quadratic equations, as well as reviewing LCM, factors, and long division to prepare for her non-calculator exam.

In Year 9, Amy focused on surface area of 3D objects by tackling textbook questions and practicing backchecking techniques, along with revising atoms and isotopes for an upcoming science test.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia strengthened her understanding of financial maths concepts such as compound interest and depreciation through targeted homework review and real-world application problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student in maths often avoided writing out full working when facing unfamiliar problems, leading to jumbled steps and confusion; as one tutor noted, "her working out was sometimes incoherent because she hesitated to write unless sure."

In Year 10 financial maths, missing a single tax calculation step meant every subsequent answer was affected.

For a senior student tackling algebra and trigonometry, revision focused mainly on easy material instead of challenging questions—this limited their ability to adapt in new contexts.

During an English task, uncertainty about how to start an essay caused significant delays before any writing began.

Recent Achievements

One Wantirna South tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously missed simple marks due to untidy maths writing is now consistently setting out solutions with clear steps and correct units, which has helped avoid small but costly errors.

A Year 8 student, after struggling to rearrange algebraic expressions for several weeks, began applying the techniques independently this week and even tackled new graphing problems without prompting.

In a recent primary session, a Year 4 student who used to guess answers in long division now talks through each step aloud and checks her own work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Knox Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wantirna South Primary School.
