A tutor can help create a safe environment for a child to voice their concerns with learning which they may feel unable to do in a class setting. Having one-on-one tutor sessions can also help a child to target exactly what they are struggling with. A tutor also has more time with that student to assess what they are good at in order to keep…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with a supportive and encouraging learning environment. This means taking the time to understand each student's unique needs, learning style, and interests, and tailoring the tutoring approach accordingly. A good tutor should also be patient and compassionate,…

A tutor should be able to provide good advice for a student with respect to the individual needs of the student. By being flexible, open and available to help students as much as possible, tutors have the capacity to develop a deep and meaningful connection with them and students will be able to trust and learn more from the tutor. As high school…

Make sure that the student is comfortable with your way of teaching and is actively involved. Tutoring is not only about jabbering stuff even though the student doesn’t understand a single thing. You have to take it slow and steady until your student is confident enough and can explain the same concept back to you even well. - calmness…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond just teaching the subject. A tutor should build their confidence, encourage critical thinking, and provide constant support and motivation. It’s also essential to foster independence while ensuring that students always feel supported and know they can seek guidance…

I believe a tutor needs empathy. The tutor needs to make a targeted effort to understand their student. A student's weaknesses, strengths, drive and thinking style all play an integral role in a student's learning process and thus should be taken into account when developing lessons. Individual needs must be considered to facilitate realistic and…

I think the most important thing is that they feel motivated to learn, and that going to a tutor would be a fun experience for them. With that, a tutor should be able to clearly teach students and that the student can confidently go to a tutor knowing that he or she will fully understand his or lessons. They should always feel that the learning…

Making a student as confident as possible is the upmost important aspect of tutoring in my mind. This is because, no matter how many hours are spent studying, if a student is not confident within themselves, in exam settings they will constantly doubt themselves and make avoidable mistakes. Therefore, building students confidence is the most…

The biggest thing would be to help students understand that ignorance is not failure. Just because they don't know something "basic", that does not mean they are worse than others, or are stupider, or are not going to succeed. It simply means they were not taught in a way that makes sense to them. This could be for a number of reasons, and not…

A tutor should not just be present to give the student all the answers. I believe an important component of tutoring is patience, ensuring that the student completely understands the topic before moving on. This leads into following up. Shireen has been a great tutor for our son over the last two years. He started working with her when he was struggling with math concepts in year 8 and has gone on to be one of the top students in his class. He has also picked up learning skills and now is confident enough to learn on his own. I would highly recommend Shireen.

Inside WaratahTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Tyler worked on adding and subtracting decimals as well as rounding numbers up and down, using his school maths booklet to prepare for an upcoming grading exam.

In Year 10, Chloe practised calculating compound interest and depreciation in financial mathematics, alongside interpreting bivariate data graphs with a focus on plotting non-linear relationships.

Meanwhile, Erika in Year 11 revised normal distribution concepts—including Z-scores and percentage calculations—before tackling dividend yield problems and applying her skills to past exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Mathematics, a student's study outside lessons was minimal—"not a lot of study being completed outside of school time (approx. 1 hour weekly), and notes not dated"—which led to persistent gaps in Financial Maths and Bivariate Data.

Missed or incomplete homework also slowed progress; as one tutor observed, "he explained it was because of lack in knowledge to complete the questions."

In Year 7 Algebra, another student's maths workbook was described as "a little more organised and tidy but we will work on that for next year," showing how messy layout can hinder reviewing working and tracking errors.

Recent Achievements

One Waratah tutor recently noticed a Year 12 student who had previously struggled with interpreting complex exam questions now using new strategies like underlining key terms and breaking down prompts, allowing him to complete band 5–6 maths problems almost entirely on his own.

In another session, a high school student who once hesitated to start tasks independently is now attempting and finishing most homework without outside help, even going beyond what was assigned.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student showed clear improvement by tackling ratio word problems step-by-step out loud—where before she would stay silent when unsure—and successfully solved them solo by the end of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mayfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Callaghan College Waratah Campus.
