As a tutor you need to provide the individual with problem solving skills to allow them to recognise when a situation is difficult and ways in which they can go about the problem or situation in an effective way to gain insight. This relates to when the child may have a difficult problem for which they can break things down into smaller more…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. What obvious for you, won't always be obvious for your students. So you have to be patient as students are all different. The most important thing tutor a tutor can do is to teach students to solve problems independently. The tutor should teach not only how steps to complete the problems but also the logic behind the problems. Thus, students could solve similar or harder questions on their own the next time. One of my strengths is that I know how to adjust the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them to learn for themselves. It is easy to rote memorize a formula or a text, but to be able to teach someone how they can teach themselves and to show them how to problem solve so that they can attack problems independently is far more valuable I believe my strengths as a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is support students in a way that builds their confidence, not makes them feel like they’re lacking. As a tutor it is vital that they are encouraging and always find solutions to help a student who may find a certain aspects of a subject difficult or they may not like. It is also important as a tutor to listen and respond to the students needs and goals, and be organised to set those small stepping stones to help the student to achieve that. My…

A tutor possesses many pivotal roles in a student's journey to tertiary levels. I believe the single most crucial contribution a tutor can make is to fan the flame. If a student gives up on their own ability despite genuine interest, then their potential will be lost. A tutor has the unique capability, and responsibility, to recognise and…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

Inside WareembaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Rose practiced multiplication using the column method for two- and three-digit numbers, then started long division, reinforcing skills with games and timed worksheets.

A Year 9 student revised trigonometry and probability questions to prepare for an upcoming exam, focusing on solving right-angled triangle problems and basic chance calculations.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student worked through questions on finding the midpoint, distance, and gradient of a line given two points, applying these to graph linear relationships.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student tended to check every maths answer with me before moving on, showing hesitation despite correct work—this meant quiz time was spent seeking reassurance instead of practicing independently.

In Year 10, a missed assignment detail wasn't shared during sessions; as the tutor noted, "he would have benefitted from input," but did it alone and missed out on targeted feedback.

A senior student struggled with exam time management, having to rush sections after underestimating how long tasks like financial maths would take. The stress lingered as she recounted feeling pressed for time after the session ended.

Recent Achievements

One Wareemba tutoring session saw a Year 11 student move from relying on memorised rules to confidently breaking down differentiation problems step by step, even cross-checking with earlier concepts like Pythagoras when needed.

In Year 9 English, a student who used to struggle with essay structure is now independently using the P.E.E. format and can clearly explain her reasoning for each point.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often rushed through addition tasks surprised her tutor this week by pausing to double-check answers—spotting and fixing her own errors before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Abbotsford Public School.
