I think the most important things a tutor can do is to provide academic guidance, human connection, and motivation and drive interest of the student towards the subject. The combination of these factors can potentially reinvent a class, subject, or school more broadly for a young learner. Creativity and enthusiasm for teaching. Ability to explain…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student include: 1. Foster Understanding: A tutor’s primary role is to help the student grasp the subject matter. This means breaking down complex ideas into simpler parts, providing clear explanations, and offering different perspectives until the student understands. 2. Build Confidence: By…

I think understanding that every kid is different and special in their own way, and they have their own needs and methods of approaching problems is very important. Every tutor should try to personalise the tutor session based on the needs, learning pattern and pace, interests and goals of the children so that they can make the most out of it. I…

I think that would be putting themselves as a student and be the teacher they always wanted/needed when they were their age. There is nothing more powerful than a teacher who is still a student at heart, in my opinion. Empathy as a student, as well as finding simple ways to explain complex…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel confident with any subject or topic they are struggling with. To provide continuous guidance and support to them. To ensure that no student is left behind in any way. To motivate them to give their 100% in every subject. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is to simplify…

I think the most important thing to understand as a tutor is that different students think differently. Certain students will naturally have more or less affinity to different subjects, but also different ways of learning. Trying to figure out which way to best teach requires understanding which way students are best able to learn. For instance,…

To help a student walk the right path that he/she desires. A tutor should understand a students passion and dream and help them achieve this dream. Acknowledging one's own failure and encouraging students to learn from his/her mistakes rather than losing hope. Student needs to understand why they are smothered with all this education, the reason…

motivation, encouragement, and guidance. for me, tutoring is not about giving a subject material and that's it, the parents will leave with their child, therefore, you have to be trustworthy, and show them that he will be better not only as a student but also as a human. other than technical abilities, motivation and enthusiasm to the students,…

I think a tutor should have at least some level of personal connection with the student. A tutor should always motivate students to try their hardest, and also engage them into the subject as much possible. The ability to understand, to some extent at least whether the student has understood that paricular concept or…

The tutor should have the knowledge of what they are teaching, as that would not cause any hindrance while the child is in the learning phase. The tutor should also be kind and attentive towards the children. I am very comfortable around children, and I tend to make them comfortable too. Inside WavertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Charlie worked on logic and probability through challenging homework word problems, along with number patterns and the addition and subtraction of negative numbers.

In Year 9, Emily focused on revising linear algebra concepts using practice assignments and explored key ideas in networks by interpreting diagrams.

For Year 10, Alex completed trigonometry revision—especially sine rule applications—and tackled a financial mathematics review to consolidate understanding of percentages in real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student approached logarithms and exponentials confidently, but avoided writing full working—"explaining his working out will help him better understand concepts," a tutor noted—making it harder to catch misconceptions early.

In Year 9 algebra revision, one student only tackled easy problems set by the teacher, so weak spots in graphing and congruency proofs went unaddressed before tests.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner hesitated to admit confusion during new linear topics, sometimes just nodding along rather than asking questions; this led to gaps that later slowed progress when more complex problems appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Waverton tutor noticed a real shift with a Year 10 student who used to freeze up on worded maths problems—this week, he started talking through each step out loud and grouped terms confidently on his own.

A Year 11 student tackled revision questions in geometry and even requested extra practice in an area she previously avoided, showing new initiative during her session.

In Year 6 English, a quieter student began asking clarifying questions about literary techniques instead of guessing, which hadn't happened before—she finished by explaining metaphor examples back unprompted.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like SHORE - Sydney Church of England Preparatory School, North Sydney.
