To me, a tutor has to be approachable to the students so that the students do not hesitate in approaching him/her at the time of their needs. He/she needs to be a beacon of hope for the students who can guide them in the early stages of their lives. The trust of the students in their tutor is paramount and he/she should upheld it to their…

Teach them how to think, not parrot: I learnt myself in highschool english, my…

A tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel safe making mistakes and asking questions. I think It's important to build understanding, not just give answers, and to help students develop confidence and independent learning skills they can use on their own. I'm patient and good at breaking complex ideas into simple steps. I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only create well-structured learning plans, but also execute them according to different students' needs. By understanding the pace and most effective learning methods for students, whilst fostering a supportive learning environment where they are encouraged to ask questions, tutors can…

I think invoking a love or passion for learning is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. I also think it's important to let a student be curious and feel comfortable asking questions and asking more instead of feeling compelled to be satisfied with only what's given I am very patient as a person. I have tutored before and have a…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to educate them at the student's own speed. The teacher should encourage and bring the best out of the students, not compare to other students. It is not always about students competing with each other, but doing their best and improving daily. I think my strengths are:…

Being able to meet the needs of the parents and students. Every student is unique and they have goals that they wish to achieve. Although these goals may be similar, I believe a tutor must listen attentively and work towards these particular targets so they can achieve what the student desires. A tutor also has to establish a sense of trust. This…

I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. A few of the most important skills for the field are patience and communication. Since you’re dealing with students and their weaknesses, you need to be patient in whatever circumstances arise. Additionally, the only way to do your job as a tutor is to convey tough…

A tutor must be aware of the needs of a student. They must understand what the student already knows, and how they best learn, and a good tutor can adapt to different student needs. A good tutor also needs to inject confidence into a student. Teaching is one thing, but showing a student that they can succeed is what makes a difference. I am a…

According to me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand his/her situation and academic difficulties. It's important to relate to the student and their problem in order to be able to solve it. Another very important thing is trust. There has to be mutual trust for a knowledge transfer to happen. Mostly is the responsibility and the enthusiasm. There are 2 things that are most important. First is to help the students develop a thought process instead of just coming up with answers. An independent thought process can help the student a lot in the future as well. And second, beyond passing exams, the tutor’s job is to ignite an interest in the subject so the student wants to keep…

Karla's tutoring is going very well. Hilario has a lovely manner and approach and Karla seems to be getting on very well with him. They have talked about getting the basics right and he's teaching her tips to remember key things as Karla becomes very stressed in exams and cannot concentrate. So hopefully this approach will help.

Inside West RydeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Amy worked on solving linear algebraic equations and inequalities, as well as finding midpoints and gradients in coordinate geometry using diagrams for clarity.

Year 10 student Ethan focused on trigonometric applications including the Sine Rule and Cosine Rule, plus practised integration techniques relevant to their current coursework.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Lily tackled exam revision by covering calculus concepts like differentiation and integration alongside statistics topics such as regression analysis with real past paper questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student working on algebraic equations involving fractions relied heavily on a calculator, which, as one tutor noted, "meant he struggled to spot patterns or catch errors without it."

In Year 11 advanced maths, a student avoided practicing questions they got wrong, preferring familiar types—this limited exposure to exam-style challenges.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 learner skipped regular homework from their textbook; missed practice led to confusion when new fraction topics appeared in class.

For one HSC candidate, rare revision sessions left steps half-remembered during problem-solving under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in West Ryde recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to make repeated mistakes with negative numbers now actively double-checking their signs and explaining each step out loud, which has helped her get through tricky algebra questions with fewer errors.

A Year 12 student who previously struggled to connect integration techniques to area problems started using the first principles method independently, tackling practice questions without hints.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student who would guess answers on worded ratio problems began pausing to write out what each part of the question means before solving—last session, he set up and solved a multi-step problem entirely on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like West Ryde Public School.
