I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is providing them with a positive experience relating to schooling which they can bring into their formal education, overall increasing their confidence, grades and mood. My main strength as a tutor is manipulating my lesson plans and the resources that I have to fit the students'…

A tutor can assist student in understanding the concepts more clearly and a tutor can mold a student's focus on the subject. A tutor is a constant reminder for a student to choose the right techniques for study. A tutor can explain the nuances of not just learning concepts but also to reciprocate them in the exam. My patience with students and my…

The most important thing one can do as a tutor is making sure their students needs are being met with. If a student requires extra attention or help in a certain area, it is the tutors responsibility to know that and give the required help . I also believe it is vital for a tutor to have a personalised study plan for each student, based on their…

Help students become interested in a subject they once thought was too difficult, and show them how to appreciate its complexities instead of getting lost in confusing terms. I believe one teacher can change a student’s path and help them fall in love with a subject. I am a thorough tutor, and I can vouch with confidence that I can make any…

The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. And in this way, the student will remember what he/she learns for a lifetime and not just for the purpose of examinations. I am a very patient Tutor,…

Being there and answering questions they ask at anytime whoch would be crucial. If you can make your students shine and bring their own strengths to the forefront, you've won. You have to believe in them before they believe in themselves and if you're in tune with your student and can bring out all their hidden gems, there's nothing that could compare. I think I'm pretty engaging and just enjoy expressing myself. If I'm…

In school, they teach students based on a certain method that suits a cohort or class of students, which caused some students to lag behind. I find that as a tutor, we need to identify which part is lagging behind, then tackle it together with the student. I am friendly so I could easily build a rapport with my students. I come in understanding…

Ensuring your student is feeling comfortable and confident to try new things is paramount. A student needs to understand that making mistakes is part of the learning process. They need to feel safe and comfortable to make mistakes. I also try to incorporate the interests of a student into learning where possible. E.g. turning a math problem…

In my high school days, i went to alot of tutors and i learned the difference between a good and a bad tutor. Bad tutors i believe stay within the box, afraid to go out and expose the students true potential. A good tutor can not only help the student keep on track of school work and assist in any difficulties the student may have, but also push…

A tutor needs to be a strong support for the student. Providing a comfortable environment where the student can discuss and barriers to learning that may be affecting them without the fear of judgement or doubt will enhance the learning experience by many fold. Tutors must be flexible and adjustable to adapt to the student's learning style and…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is to be non-judgemental and to genuinely believe that each and every student will succeed. Although some children might be slower to grasp certain concepts, at the end of the day the most important thing is to encourage them every step of the way. I graduated high school with an ATAR of 94.3,…

Inside WestmeadowsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Adam explored probability and fractions from Chapter 7, working through practical problems to strengthen understanding.

Year 10 student Chloe revised completing the square and practiced sketching quadratic graphs, focusing on how changes in equations affect their shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily tackled language analysis by annotating an article for persuasive techniques and then practiced writing her own analysis using those features.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 English, a student left revision too late and struggled to recall key quotes for No Sugar, making it difficult to build essay paragraphs ("did not know key aspects of the texts").

In another senior class, homework was incomplete—time meant for learning persuasive techniques was lost.

A Year 9 student's essay work stalled when their book was left at school; this also limited reading over the week.

In primary maths, one student continued to rely on counting fingers instead of recalling multiplication facts quickly, slowing progress in division tasks. Moments like these lead to gaps that are hard to bridge mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Westmeadows tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who, after previously hesitating to ask for help, started actively seeking clarification on tricky vocabulary during lessons and pinpointed exactly which exam areas needed work.

Another high schooler had struggled to link quotes between novels, but this week managed to connect key passages across two texts and explain how they fit major themes—something she'd never attempted before.

Meanwhile, a younger student grew visibly more relaxed as the session went on, ending by volunteering answers aloud after starting out quiet and reserved.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Westmeadows Primary School.
